Blood in stool

I am 71 and for the last couple of weeks have not had normal stools. They are sometimes soft and small and a feeling in my bottom to go to loo most of the time. I have a pain not constant but if you press it hurts on my right side upper. Up until now had no blood in poo. Needed to go to loo and there was light red blood on the poo and small amount when I wiped.I have also been passing wind a lot.Needless to say am worried sick this is serious. Not seen a Dr for years as am scared but am otherwise healthy . I know I will have to see tge Dr but am now sat here worrying myself. Sorry to go on.

Stop worrying, Jean! See your GP now, may be nothing other than piles, but why leave it ? Worrying always makes matters worse! You have otherwise good health on your side, so don't risk anything to change that! There are many changes in life as we grow older, but these days 71 is not old! You need to ease your mind !

Good luck and let us know how you get on!

Thank you. I always thought piles would hurt from the bottom !! I must admit have had a flare up like this about 10yrs ago and it went but am worried it might be something more sinister. I will pluck up the courage and make an appointment. Sorry for being a wimp and thanks for getting back to me.

Hi it's always better to go to the Dr as they can treat so many things these days.  The right side pain would concern me so it is probably best to phone to get an appointment right away and explain your symptoms (from what I understand constipation pains are usually on the left??).  Also NHS help line might be good as well.  I've had different bowel issues and although it can be embarrassing going to the dr regarding these problems -- they are so common that doctors have seen all of it before and should put you at ease.  Also, if you have to have tests -- again the hospital staff are usually so nice and understanding as everyone is nervous about these things.  Just remember that most problems can be treated fairly well these days so don't despair.  Hope it all goes ok.  karen

Hi. Sorry been so long in letting you know how I got on Finally went to the Dr. She did rectal exam and said there was nothing there that concerned her she requested bloods and apart from a Vit D deficiency for which she has put me on a course nothing else had shown up. She also suggested a bowel screen test which I did and that came back normal However since my original post my bowel has sort of returned to normal and no blood in stool etc that is until today..when I found bright red blood on stool and on wiping. I am making an appt next week and going to ask for a colonoscopy as it's now worrying me so again will keep you posted

Don’t think about the worst Jean, I have this symptomps as well with blood cots and fresh blood almost every day now. And I had a colonoscopy as well and they didn’t find anything, so maybe it is just a hemorroid what they can’t see?! I hope you the best of luck. And don’t hesitate to write after it .smile

Had my Colonoscopy yesterday.... have to say I didn't feel a thing. After being so worried what was going to happen it all went very well. The taking of the laxative the night and morning of the procedure wasn't pleasent but not as bad as I thought, think the lemony taste helped, After the prep by the nurse for the sedation I can honestly say I didn't feel anything and I am the biggest coward of all even having a jab I get cold sweats. Anyhow enough of this. The outcome is Diverticular disease. Have to admit after reading lots of experiences of pain on this mine seems not so bad so was surprised as apart from a sometimes dull or sharp pain on my right side it was not debilitating, yes uncomfortable feeling of not emptying my bowel and frequent loose stool with a small amount of blood I think comparing to some have come off lightly. I didn't know there was a difference between Diverticular and Diverticulitis. I would thank those who took trouble to reply to my woes and your kind words. God Bless and Hope you all keep well
