Blood in stool - very anxious

Hi everybody, I’m a 27 year old female who has always suffered with stomach problems for as long as I can remember.  I get an upset tummy very easily and about two years ago I had a period of six months where I had constant diarrhea everytime I ate and I’d be in tremendous amounts of pain when going to the bathroom. I went to a doctor who suggested I have a colonoscopy but the waiting list was so long that by the time I was called up, it’d stopped so I stupidly assumed whatever it was had sorted itself out.

Two months ago, the symptoms came back again however a couple of weeks ago I began losing blood with every single bowel movement. The blood is red or pink, noticeable and mixed in with the stool which has hardened up a little but is just small little lumps with blood in them or if I’m straining then it can be just mucus with blood.

The doctor doesn’t seem concerned and has suggested after a few blood tests, stool samples, X-ray and rectal and abdominal examination that he suspects it’s IBD because my inflammation levels were raised though he’s not sure which kind it is.  The waiting list for a colonoscopy is insanely long again and although the doctor has started me on steroids out of courtesy to see if it fixes the problem, I’ve been on them for a week and I’m still continuing to lose blood in my loose stools.

I suffer from anxiety anyway and this is literally eating me up. I don’t wake up in the night in pain, nor am I in pain unless I need to go to the bathroom (when I do it’s just a cramping) and the blood doesn’t drip down into the bowl it’s just mixed in and on the tissue. After I eat I also get a VERY loud gurgling and bubbling that increases my need to go to the bathroom.

Has anybody with IBD had this experience? Of course I am absolutely terrified I have the big C and the doctor is missing it.

Sounds very much like IBD! Keep pressing for a colonoscopy as that will determine it! Try not to stress, anxiety only makes it worse! I suggest you keep a diary of your symptoms for when you see a consultant! It's horrible, I know, but try to stay positive! Have you been told how long you will have to wait?

I can’t have my colonoscopy until mid May but the thought of waiting that long while I’m bleeding is really stressing me out. I’ve heard stories of people with IBD losing so much blood in the toilet that they’re anemic but my levels are fine which is why I’m wondering if it really is that or not.

I’ve seen two GPs and a doctor in a&e which probably says I should be calm and accept what they all think.

Definitely wise to remain calm! As your levels are ok at the moment then why not contact department dealing with your appointment to note that you can be available for any cancellation! That way you may be seen sooner! Try not to worry!

I too think it sounds like IBS because if you have had blood tests and examinations etc it's likely to be more anxiety and IBS. Once you let yourself get into the rut of worrying it makes the IBS worse. I have IBS too and take one turmeric capsule each morning and I am certain that has helped me.

I find the Simply Supplenents turmeric circumin capsules best they seem to be the right amount anyway. Google it and read turmeric and IBS
