blood in stools

Hi I've been on sertraline for 8 weeks.  I've just started to feel it kicking in after quite a rough ride with it. Sadly I have started to notice quite a lot of bright red blood on toilet paper after I go to the loo.  I have quite a lot of abdominal pain too.  Its rather upsetting as I was just starting to feel better. Could it be the sertraline? Should I be concerned? Should I come off it?

I'm glad you are feeling better, I very much doubt that bleeding of any kind could be caused by an SSRI but strongly urge you to see your GP ASAP, it maybe piles if you are constipated but you need to check it out quickly in case it's bowel cancer. Sorry to scare you.

He did NOT say drops of blood, he said "quite a lot of bright red blood" why are you being rude to me, yes this is a place for depression & anxiety, physical illness is part of that.

    Hi there chris,

I wouldnt be concerned at all with the dots of blood on the toilet paper this happens to me alot and it happens to my wife also. Some days i can strain or go alot then i will get it or if i have anything spicey or peppers ect this is known as ring sting lol and will turr it a little. Try baby wipes for a few days normally settles myn down alot and the wifes too.

Bowel problems tend to be alot more than dots of blood and also wieght loss and the runs you would know my grandad had bowel cancer and his first symptom was extreme blood loss in the toilet

Hi Scott thanks for that.  I have had the dots of blood in the past too and haven't been too concerned.  However this recent episode was practically the whole paper covered in blood.  It was more than I'd ever seen.  My whole abdominal area feels very painful too...

I honestly would worry about it but if it puts your mind at rest then check up with the doctor but id put a pretty penny on it that you maybe have a little ibs or a food intolerence or just a little stomach bug ect. When people say it could be bowel cancer let me tell you that its the least probable thing that could be wrong. I get it atleast 1 or 2 times a week and have done for years. It annoys me when people put it could be bowel cancer ect dont they realise this site is for people with anxiety and depression jesus people

Well, how rude you are, ANY bleeding that covers toilet paper is a cause of great concern, look it up, are you a doctor??? I put it very politely and said not to panic but see your doctor quickly, which is what any sensible person would say. Thank you.

Im not arguing with you, i was saying in general people are so soon to say the worst case scenario when people are already suffering with anxiety and depression and sends people into panic even saying that word. Its best to say i wouldnt panic but seeing a doctor would be better so you can stop panicking. Just in general if someone told you the worst case scenario then you would panic and probably all for nothing

Yes i think i got a little carried away with what i was trying to get across, i just dont like to think others are making people get worked up or worried. I was also stating that i get those issues along with my wife so i shouldnt of thought it was anything to worry about but always best to check with a doctor. If that was me it would of put me into panic mode and we all know how horrible you feel while going through worry. It could of been so many more common issues that any doctor would check for before cancer. As i have had family memebers pass away from it i think i just got a little uptight about the issue

    Hi Chris,

I'm glad the sertraline is starting to work.

I would get get the blood issue checked out by a doctor if for nothing else but peace of mind. I doubt it is the sertraline, I had a lot of abdominal pain when I went on it but most side affects are usually in the first few weeks.

it would be much better to get a doctors opinion especially if it's worrying you.

    hi chris,

this doesn't sound like a side effect of sertraline, i would reccommend that you get to ur GP or A&E as soon as you can. take care and let us know how you get on!!! :-) i do hope you are okay.
