Blood in urine

I've posted this elsewhere but maybe in the wrong place. I am a 71 yr old male. I peed blood today. Really scares me. Will make an appointment with a urologist tomorrow. Have no pain and no burning. I passed red blood today. The second time a large blood clot passed. Right now , no more blood but this worries the heck out a me. My wife had kidney cancer in 2006 and passed away 2 years ago. Doctor said they removed the kidney but it seeded in her bloodstream. So now , I fear the same is happening to me. Over the past 12 months , I think I've had about every test know to man trying to find a reason for pain in my upper abdomen. Pancreas test , gallbladder test , upper GI , colonoscopy , CT scans x-rays and I don't know how many blood tests. Even an arterial gram. Every thing turned out normal. So now , here I go again. But have blood this time. Anybody else been through this? It's pretty scary to think of kidney or bladder cancer. Would appreciate any and all feedback. I guess I just needed to say this out loud since I live alone. Thanks to anyone reading this.

Jessie, I am 69 years old, and had blood in my urine less than a year ago.  I also had blood in my urine a few years ago too.  The first time I had blood in my urine, it scarred the heck out of me! It turned out to be stones in the bladder, which was easily fixed with a laser.  The second time I had blood, which was less than a year ago, it was because when I was CICing, I also tried to compress the muscles in my abdomen. When trying to compress my abdominal muscles, somehow it injured my bladder to the point where it bled, and the blood flowed out with the urine.  It scared me at that time too, because I didn't figure out why I had blood in the urine, but after thinking about it and a little trial and error, I figured out that compressing my abdomen was the reason for the blood in the urine.  For your information, if you are over the age of 40, the chances of having bladder cancer is 10% so the odds are in your favor!  If you are under the age of 40, it's even better a 1% chance of having bladder cancer.  My guess, is that you have a bladder stone.  That's why the blood in the urine.

Thank you Dennis. I hope that's what it is. I call to make an an appointment and my urologist is gone for to days. So got an appointment for Thursday 4-12-18. Today's Tuesday , so that gives me time to really worry about this. Haven't had a PSA or exam in a little over a year. So , now pretty worried. But , I'll just wait and see what happens I guess. Thanks so much for answering. I see blood and immediately think the worse , I guess.

Oh , another question. Did you have any pain when you passed the blood. Not as much blood as yesterday but kinda brownish looking today. Have to do something about the enlarged prostate this time. Had laser surgery in 2011 , and it worked great , until now. Had several bladder stones back then but never passed blood. Thanks...

Hi Jessie I totally understand why you would be worried. I also had blood in my urine and still do but after all the worrying all the testing was normal. Yes I thought the worst because thats how I am about most medical issues. Just wait till u see the urologist and try not to worry. It will all work out in the end. Best of luck and keep us posted.

Thank you Maria. Can't help but worry. Spent the past year taking every test known , I think , trying to find out what my upper middle abdomen always hurts. Every test showed nothing. Tested everything. Pancreas, gallbladder , liver , colonoscopy , 3 endoscopies, heart arterial gram. Numerous x-rays , CT scans and ultrasounds. Plus blood test. It's just sooo frustrating. Now this ! I eat healthy , exercise daily and it seems things just don't ever get any better. Just venting , I guess. Sorry You're on the receiving end. But thank you for the encouragement! Just hate it when you know something is wrong and Dr.s hint that it must be in your head ! 😂..maybe so...

      hurts all the time.

I see that is very common after reading several forums about people with similar issues and doctors cant figure it out. Hopefully all this will unfold sooner than later keep staying healthy that's all u can do. Take care.

No pain.  I am like you, I thought the worse...cancer?  As it turned out it was because of the bladder stones.  What happens, I am guessing, is that the stones bump around in the bladder, and causes the bleeding.  Do you use a catheter to drain your bladder?  If not, I suggest doing so.  I think you will be very pleased with feeling you'll have, not having to look for a restroom all the time.  The last time I had blood in my urine, was because after inserting the catheter, and while the urine was draining through the catheter, at the same time, I was compressing my abdomen, in the hopes that it was toning my bladder.  That was not a good idea.  After I stopped doing that, I had no blood in my urine, so I canceled my appointment with my uro.  This all took place several months ago.

No , I've never used a catheter. Seems like that would hurt a lot. But , what ever it takes ! Gives me hope about the stones causing it though. Been reading about the Urolift. Have you looked into that ?

I used to feel that way too.  I thought, that must hurt.  After trying it, I was very surprised that it was not at all painful.  It feels a little weird at first, but not uncomfortable or painful. I used to see how fast I could do it, and my best time was 3 seconds from point of entry to the bladder.  I stopped doing that speed thing, because I thought this is very foolish.  So now I go very slowly, so as not to injure any tissue along the way to the bladder.  My time now, is around a minute or a little less.  Total time to empty the bladder and clean up would be no more than 5 minutes. After emptying the bladder, I am good for several hours, before I have to urinate.  The most I've gone after doing CIC, was 7 hours. In the pre-CIC days, I would have to urinate every 2 hours or around there.  I would always be on the look out for a restroom...what a hum-bug!  I strongly suggest you try doing CIC. Not only does it feel good afterward, but you are emptying your bladder of stale urine, and giving your bladder, a chance to strengthen  itself.

Thank you Dennis , that's comforting to know.

Went to the doc today. Put me on antibiotics for a week. Go back next Thursday for Cystoscopy to look at prostate and bladder and take a biopsy. I've increased my water intake dramatically and there's much less blood now. Just a couple of small clots in the morning. So , now I 'ok just have to wait until next Thursday. Thanks again Dennis. I'm just hopping for good news now.

Jessie, what I've learned about antibiotics, is that it wipes out your entire colony of bacteria in the body, good and bad bacteria.  Humans, have around 25 trillion cells of bacteria, and when you use antibiotics, they are all gone.  Now it takes time for it to repopulate to nomal levels.  In the mean time your body, is not balanced so you are susceptible to illnesses etc.  In addition to that, the bacteria that you are trying to get rid of, is now a little more resistant to the antibiotics.  A endless revolving door.  Before my mother-in-law passed, she was on a handful of medications...which didn't seem to help anyway.

Yes.I've been through many antibiotic treatments. Not been a good year and a half. Diagnosed with H-PYLORI LAST year. 14 day triple antibiotic treatment . Miserable ! Used yogurt and Kifir for politics. Then a bronchial bacteria infection. 10 days antibiotics. Then 8 days in the hospital with a blood bacteria. Used a different antibiotic each time. Never found out where the bacteria in the blood came from. Even the CDC was involved. Had sooo many tests , I lost count. Even had test the nurses read about but never witnessed. Crappy year. Now this. Seems to never end. So , I've stocked up on probiotics. Tired of tests and antibiotics at this point.

I feel lucky that at 71 yrs , I only take 3 prescriptions. 5 mg B/P med , 75mg Thyroid med and a 1mg Lorazapam at bedtime and around noon for anxiety.

If you go on You Tube, and look up thyroid problems, there are lots of information on the subject.  I saw some interesting information from a doctor about taking sufficient amounts of iodine, to help keep you tyroid working properly.  I forgot his name, but if you look it up on You Tube, you'll be amazed.  I am 69 ;years old, and not on any kind of medication, just vitamins, minerals, and most of the time healthy foods.  I eat a lot of junk too!
