Blood in Urine aged 62

Hi

I am 62 year old woman and went for a well- woman check recently. Everything went fine until the nurse tested my water sample and detected non-visible blood and protein.  Samples have been sent off for lab analysis. I have no other symtoms of concern. 

I am very worried about this as I have read in patient leaflets that anyone over 60 who has blood in the urine should be referred to a specialist.  I have to wait a few stressful days for the results to come back. I am worried that I may have bladder cancer as a symptom checker has  shown  that  bladder cancer is one common reason for non-visible blood in urine.

Could anyone kindly advise me should I have been give a specialist referral due to my age as well as having my urine sample sent for analysis?

    This question comes up frequently.  Microscopic blood in urine can come from a number of benign causes, such as running and jogging or other exercising, undetected stones in the bladder, etc.  So, don't assume the worst.  Certainly have it checked, but try to relax in the meantime.

    Please don't worry I had the same problem. I paid to see a Consultant who told me that it is something that ladies of a certain age (I am 64) often have.  I also suffer from overactive bladder.  He advised me to have a cystoscopy so he could look inside my bladder. The procedure was uncomfortable but NOT painful and the results were fine.  I am on medication for my OAB and low dose antibiotics to try to prevent me getting recurrent urine infections.  Even with the antiobiotics my latest MSU showed that there is still a slight infection present in my urine although I have no symptoms of a UTI and cannot see blood in my urine.  The Consultant told me he was not worried but will review me again in three months.

    I'M 72 I'VE HAD QUITE A FEW URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS IN MY LIFE. WHERE MY URINE HAD TO BE SENT OUT FOR TESTING. PLEASE DON'T WORRY. ITS PROBABLY JUST AN INFECTION IT WILL CLEAR UP WITH MEDS. IF SEEING A SPECIALIST WILL PUT YOUR MIND AT EASE THEN DO SO.      BE WELL

      I couldnt find a way to reply to all who have been so kind to answer me,  My tests have come back today. The urine tests are clear and there is no infection so I am really scared now. I also have to have my blood test repeated for some reason and also I need to make an appointment to see the doctor.

      Hi- I am 70 years old-- 4 years ago I had a huge amount of visible blood in my urine. it was frightening. I went to the ER and told I had no infection and there was a concern for bladder cancer.  I went to a urologist who did a CT scan of the bladder and kidneys, a cystoscopy and sent my urine to be examined for malignant cells. I was so frightened.  Everything came back negative and I still have no idea why I had such a large amount of blood in my urine.  Since then I had a urine infection that I did not know I had, nor how long I had it- turn into sepsis, requiring hospitalization.  I recovered from that but I get my urine checked from time to time; I do have hematuria (invisible red blood cells) in my urine--with no real explanation for it.

      Try not to worry, the chances that you have  bladder cancer are small. take care

      Hi Marilyn.  It's an awful worry isnt it while you are waiting to find out if anything bad s wrong? Lke you were I too am really frightened at the moment. I go back to the GP next week to discuss the lab results from the urine and blood test but I know I willl need a referral to find out the  cause.  I am so pleased you are ok. Hope I am too. Thank you for taking the time to contact me.

      Hi again Marilyn

      Since we last discussed on this forum I am no further forward. I had two urine tets done first time around and a blood test. The surgery rang me to say that the blood test was received twice at the lab? so I needed to re-do.  The urine tests both came back clear.  I went in again a few days ago and had the bloods taken again and also the urine samples (one in a white cap bottle and one in a red-cap bottle.  Now they have rang me again today to say that the lab never got the red-cap urine test so I need to re-do that again now.  I am beginning to wonder if there is something really wrong as they already had both the urine tests back the first time around and said there was no infection. So why do they need me to do another one with the reason they never received it? The NHS website says that patients of my age should be referred to a specialist anyway and I feel this is just delaying things. I just dont understand what's going on and this is adding to the stress.   Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

     do you need a referral to see a urologist? if not, I would find a good urologist and make an appt.

      I am now in the process since yesterday of getting an urgent referral to a urologist after prompting the GP that this is what I need.  Thanks for your advice and for coming back to me.
