Blood in urine but no infection and health anxiety

A couple of years ago, I was treated for what I thought was a urine infection.  However, no bacteria were ever found in the urine samples although there were traces of blood and leukocytes.  This went on for a few months.  The only thing that seemed to help was nitrofurantoin which I had to stop due to a strange reaction.

Eventually I was referred for an ultrasound which found nothing.  I still had symptoms at this point and my doctor told me to cut out tea and citrus fruits.  My symptoms then went away after a few weeks.

I slowly started with these foods again around six months ago, and a few weeks ago my symptoms all came back.  I am not sure if this is related or not.   Anyway, I went to the doctors again.  Yet again, there is no bacteria, but traces of blood.  The doctor has freaked me out by referring me on the two week wait scheme for a cystoscopy.  I am now convinced I have bladder cancer.  I admit I have health anxiety, but can't think what else is causing my problem.  I am also quite hospital phobic after a bad anaesthetic experience as a child.  Anything that might lead to me having a general anaesthetic sends me into a bag of nerves.

I am in my late 30s.   Just recently, I have noticed other pains to the right of my navel and in my vagina area.  I'm now staring to panic that the suspected bladder cancer may have spread around my body.

Does anyone have any advice for me?

      Hi guys,

I am a 32 year old female and had moderate microscopic blood detected in my urine too recently. Kidney blood test is normal. I have flank and leg pains that comes on and off. I’m damn worried it is kidney disease or bladder cancer.  Can someone share with me their readings on the amount of blood (ery/Ul)detected in their urine test but all tests come back fine? Mine is moderate so I’m really scared ;(

I’m in the same boat, I’m freakin our that it may be bladder cancer. I have lots of blood when I go pee; my urine is usually pink or red.  Pain in my lower back and feel of cramping.  I’ve been on antibiotics for 5 days but no change. I will have a follow-up. with my doc. this Friday to see what’s going on.

Hi, I posted this to another thread but it was an old one..

I've just been evaluated after a single episode of gross hematuria. I had a full work up, prostrate, testes, bladder with cystoscopy, biopsy of bladder lining, ultrasound of kidneys and bladder/prostrate and a CT of abdomen and pelvic area with and without contrast. Also kidney function blood test and urine tests.

All came back negative aside a cyst on my liver which is benign and could have always been there. While all this is reassuring I'm still thinking about what caused it. I have asked the consultant whether I need a follow up in say, 6 months. (Oh, the cystoscopy while not something I'd want every day wasn't as bad as I expected)

I do exercise a fair bit and had just done an 8 mile brisk walk but I hadn't just run a marathon so exercise induced is probably not the cause.

As a precaution and for my own peace of mind I have bought some urine strips that identify non visible blood just to monitor if there is a recurrence that I can't see.

Also, as to symptoms, I haven't had any aside the bleed. I do get periodic flank and lower ab pain, say every couple of years for a month or so but I've had this for 25 years plus and had an ultrasound a few years ago which was fine as were the most recent investigations.

Also in some papers I've read on the net it seems that up to 50% of gross hematuria are unexplained and in follow ups over 10 years or so of a study of 146 patients, 13 died from unrelated causes and only 1 presented with a tumour that was urological, and this had been missed on the original CT. That in itself is reassuring, even though this was only one study.

I can't add anything else aside, don't be put of by the thought of a cystoscopy, and don't put off going to the Dr.

Thank you Chris,  your post was helpful also.  I do plan to go for the cystoscopy done.  I have learned a lot from 2 Hydrotherapist, a Homopathic and Naturopathic Dr. over the years, and the Lord brought back to my remembrance about me cleansing my body of the Overgrowth of Yeast (Candidiasis)) they told me about in times past.  Therefore, I fasted as much food as possible and the urination of blood and blood clots ceased on the 7th day and haven't returned.  The Lord brought things back to my remembrance... I stepped away from my regular consecration eating, and ate a lot of things that i should not have over the holidays.

I am 56 and have been dealing with yeast infections off and on since age 15.  I just recently learned over the past 5-6 years, that the antibiotics that the doctors prescribed was only feeding the yeast over the years... and I should have been taking a probiotic... 4 hours after each antibiotic consumption.  The Probiotic that I am speaking of is, fermented vegetables... this and other helpful information from "Body Ecology Diet" by Donna Gates.  I clearly see now, we are what we eat... I have had to eliminate sugars, unhealthy carbs and starches and gluten.  I am presently lining back up with eating right, in order to rid my body of chemical pollutants, bacteria, yeast, fungi, heavy metals and parasites.

I also just learned something else Thursday... at my annual dental cleaning... from my dental hygienist, who is presently dealing with a lot of the issues discussed in the Patent Forum.  She shared with me, that I could urinate blood from having to much yeast in my body.  And a Dr want see an infection, if it is "bacterial vaginosis".   Also, she told me to read on "institial cystitis", but I am not experiencing any pain that speaks of.

      Hope this helps somebody...

Hi Chris. I am 26 year male. I have no blood in urine. Not even on microscopic level. Have frequent urination and urgency. Irritation near the penis on the right side at the start of scrotum. I read bladder cancer patients almost always have blood in urine and no pain. My ultrasound and urine culture twice came back negative. I have health anxiety at peak suspecting bladder cancer. I couldnt sleep. What should I do next ? Any suggestions ??

      Hi,

If you are really concerned I'd suggest a cystoscopy as the gold standard. It isn't that unpleasant. Slightly painful but more the thought of it than the actual procedure. But your symptoms don't suggest bladder cancer at all. Visible blood in urine is a presenting feature of bladder cancer  (20% of cases) and to a lesser degree kidney (1%). 50% are unexplained and the rest either STI or other infection. Have you had your prostrate examined? That can cause urinary urgency if it is inflamed.

Sorry ladies, I only noticed this was a womens health thread after I'd posted.

Thanks for your reply Chris. Ultrasound showed no enlargement in prostate. No other tests were done. I went to urologist. They treated me for prostatitis. But the symptoms persist for 1.5 months. The reason my mind jumps to bladder cancer is I smoked for 6 months (one cigarette per day) before quitting a year ago. Will smoking for such a small period of time cause BC ? I m gonna be married in 5 months. That's freaking me out a lot.

Honestly, I don't think you have anything to worry about. They diagnosed prostatitis and that is likely the cause of your urgency/frequency. I'd refer back to your GP and explain it's not cleared up. Really, the odds of bladder cancer are very very low as in spite of your lack of symptoms, your age would make it very unlikely.

Smoking is a big cause of bladder cancer, as is exposure to certain chemicals, but I'm pretty sure it's long term..meaning years if not decades. Certainly I wouldn't be worrying about one a day for 6 months.

I'm not medically qualified but nothing says to me you should have any cause for concern, particularly having had a diagnosis and an ultrasound examination.

Thanks for your kind words Chris. I am going to see urologist tomo and demand cystoscopy for peace of mind. I should rule out BC before marriage. I don't want to drag my fiancé into this in case if I have BC. Fingers Crossed.

Hey all, I just thought I would share my experience with this issue "blood in the urine but no infection" In 2015 I had this happen to me I often had frequent UTI's my whole life but when the Dr called me and said I need to visit a urologist because having blood in the urine with no infection is a sign something is going on in the body somewhere ! I had a CT Scan and they put a camera up my urethra and my bladder was ok - although they did find a 3.5cm tumor on my right adrenal gland - I was sent to an endocrinologist and my hormones were fine and I felt fine - within a week I was under the knife I the tumor had to come out is was an adrenal carcinoma which is very rare one in a million people get this form of cancer - They removed the tumor and cut the top of my kidney and I was off work 3 weeks for recovery - I have been NED for 3 years this month and I just had the same thing happen to me  I now as we speak have blood in the urine again with no infection I am scheduling an appointment with my surgeon as he knows my history and I am hoping is has not come back as its aggressive its a silent killer - I don't want to scare anyone - but don't ignore it and don't listen to doctors who tell you its normal it means something somewhere! I will let you know the outcome of my current situation soon

      Hi

I had trace and I mean a trace of blood in my urine, and went for a battery of tests, blood work up and saw a very good urologist. In the end he said as long as you don’t have Red Blood Cells In your urine you are ok. That’s what causes concern and alarm. I have to got for 5 years once a year to be checked. I went thru 5/6 months of worry and testing. I’m going to take his word and just go back for my testing. I know that they say their is a small percentage of women and men who have Microscopic blood in theirs urine and they are healthy.

    Hi Louise.

I’ve just been reading your post, and wondered if you or anyone could help me, I had a really bad water infection, worst one I’ve ever had, I went to the docotrs and they found blood in my urnie, I was prescribed a course of antibiotics called Macrobid. I was on theses for a week. I personally don’t think they have completely got rid of my infection, it’s been 5 weeks now since, and it’s actually made me poorly and down. Im in a lot of pain especially when and after I’ve passed urine it feels like I’m needing the toilet badly all the time and hurts when I go. I went back to the doctors to do another sample and it came back clear so the doctor wouldn’t give me nothing but I tried explaining I’m in a lot of pain still, I’m not pregnant either. They just said to keep drinking plenelty of water but I’m already doing that and its not helping. I have ran out of options, and the docotrs won’t help.. does anyone know what this is or could be?

You didn't mention if you have been to a Urologist. If you haven't yet I would go a soon as you can get an appointment. They will insert a tube in the uthera and perform a ultrasound. It is no big thing to have done. It may sting just a little. Hope this will help you.
