I'm actually going through this at the moment, and as a matter of fact, I became a member here 2 days ago to see if I can find any discussions about it, as it's scaring me.

I was always checking my blood pressure at home with my BP wrist monitor, and when I mentioned it to my doctor that I check it every day, he told me it wasn't necessary, and to take it once a week, which I did. (I have 'white coat syndrome', so had to prove to my doctor many years ago that my blood pressure was normal, and thats why I got the monitor). I then got a bit slack and would do it every month instead, and last month, it was 135/85. I didn't think much of that, as I have put on at least 20 kgs (44 pounds), and figured that was a reflection of my weight gain. I took my BP 5 days ago, and it was 188/95. I couldn't believe it, and of course, I kept checking it over and over again, even though that was the wrong thing to do, because the anxiety was keeping it up high. I looked at many Youtube videos about lowering high BP, and searched many forums to see if any other women went through it, and the menopause Facebook group I'm on has several women whose blood pressure spiked during menopause, and a lot said that they noticed a spike around the time they have their periods. I haven't had my periods for exactly 6 months, but ovulated 2 weeks ago, so I'm guessing its because I'm going to get my periods soon. I still have high blood pressure, mostly in the morning, which drops down to 145/85 in the afternoon, but I've put myself on a keto diet, which is supposed to be good at lowering blood pressure. I'm going to give it a couple of weeks and if it doesn't improve, I'm going to go to the doctors. I've started taking Magnesium tablets again, as I stopped when I ran out about 3 months ago, and I'm also eating a banana and pistachio nuts every day for the potassium, which lowers blood pressure too.

      Hi

My blood pressure is fantastic now, thankfully. But not because of the keto. Initially, when I first started the keto, it took about 2 to 3 weeks to start coming down, but it wasn't enough. I kept going on to the menopause facebook page I'm on and searching for high blood pressure posts, and found one reply from a woman who said that her blood pressure was extremely high and she was rushed to hospital. The doctors had done so many tests on her, but everything came back normal. End result was she had a sensitivity to salt. I figured that was why my blood pressure was coming down, because I used to eat potato chips every day, but on the keto, I stopped the carbs, BUT on keto, you are allowed to eat bacon, salami, etc, which is very high in salt, and of course, what I was eating, but not every day. After reading the post on salt sensitivity, I decided to stop having salt to see what would happen to my BP, and my reading was perfect.I decided to test it to see if it was the salt, and had something salty, and checked my BP afterwards, and it was very high again. Following day, had no salt, checked BP, and it was perfect. Bingo !!!! I found the culprit. I've stopped putting salt on my meals, and tell people if they want salt, to add it themselves. It's been perfect ever since I worked it out. If it is high, I check the label on what I ate during the day to read the salt content, and can always pinpoint it to something I ate. You just don't know how much salt is put in food products, and some of the levels of sodium are very high.

Hi. I've googled high blood pressure during periods, etc, and from what I've read, they all seem to say that it is caused by the spike in hormones during the periods causing the blood pressure to go up. I've also read many times that women who enter menopause can become sensitive to salt, which also increases blood pressure. The reason I'm not going to the doctor now and waiting a month while doing the keto, is that I know it takes some time before high blood pressure can start to affect the body (going by Doctors online). If my blood pressure starts going over the 180/120 mark, that's when I'll start panicking and go to the doctor or hospital. However, just a thought, do you take a pain killer when you've got your periods, as that also increases blood pressure?

      Hi Mary220766,

I think our hormones are all over the place now. I did not take any pain killer during my period. It may be health anxiety that i am going through that rise the blood pressure too. I got so worry about my health that i even have nightmare.

My blood pressure is up and low. This month my period came and my BP went up to 163/92

After my period, it goes down to 133/80

      So crazy.

On top of this, the new thing i am experiencing now is the very bad headache. It is so bad during the period days that i can't do anything. This is when i took out my monitor and got a shock of my BP over 160/92

Now i am still experience the headache but it is not so intense.

Same here. My BP fluctuates too, at times normal then the next over 150. Are we consider HBP? Should we take BP Med?

I'm also having problems with high blood pressure.

I was having palpatations in July, checked my blood pressure at home and was shocked when it was 180/105. I went to the urgent care centre the following morning and it had gone down to 140/89. They suggested I see my gp and have hormone levels checked as they said it could be due to the menopause..... The surgery called me to confirm I am in peri menopause and started me on low dose blood pressure medication. My blood pressure is still a bit high and yesterday spiked to 177/103 so not sure what to do now!

Is your high in the morning or night? or it can be anytime of the day.

      It scare me so much.

Once i had bad headache, take my blood pressure at home and was shocked that it was over 160 and 90.

Not sure if it is the HBP that cause headache or the other way round.

Everyday something to make me worry

My blood pressure seems to creep up during the day. My medication has been doubled so just hoping that will do the trick.

I'm not so bad with headaches, just a fuzzy feeling and tinnitus when my BP is high. All these issues really doesn't help with anxiety does it?! I don't know what came first anymore, the anxiety or the blood pressure problem!
