Blood test results for peri menopause - help please

Hi everybody

I am new on here. I have wanted  to join for a while but feared that I would just complain about my numerous symptoms  too much, so have avoided it...until now lol

 I have been having symptoms for years and have felt like I am in peri menopause despite regular periods which changed slightly over a year but are now back to being regular.  My GP sent me for a blood test and I have tried to decipher the results - despite this awful 'brain fog' but have given up and thought it would be easier to ask on here. My results were;

Serum follicle stimulating hormone level 6.1 iuL

Follicular 4 - 13

mid cycle 5 - 22

luteal 2 - 8

post mpause 26 -135

The blood test was done 2 weeks after the start of a period - if that helps.

I did ask my GP to explain and she offered me HRT. Either because she thought I needed it or to get rid of me. I am a frequent visitor at the surgery !! Thanks in advance for any replies. I am so pleased I joined on here as I really thought I had a terrible disease or I am going mad. I am 49.

    Hi Deb, welcome to our club 🙂I also had a blood test done and got an fsh of 6, I had been tracking my cycle before hand so knew that the day I had it done I was in the luteal phase which would make it a bit high , but really who knows for sure?? I just don’t really think the blood tests are that good at diagnosing peri menopause, the problem during this time is the hormones are fluctuating like crazy, but a blood test can only report on what is happening at the time of the test, so how can it show this? You have to look at symptoms, I’m only 41 and have been feeling off for nearly 2 years, didn’t consider menopause until I started having night sweats - with a vengeance! And then I put all the symptoms together -  mood swings, nausea, and changing periods, and came to my own conclusion, even though my doctor doesn’t really believe me...I’m too young for hrt so they suggested the pill, which I’ve been on for 3 weeks now, and so far it’s not made any difference but I’m willing to keep trying as it can take weeks to work, otherwise I’ll see a specialist and go on hrt, good luck

      I was just thinking about you this morning and wondering how you were. Maybe the pill just takes awhile! I hope you find some relief soon! Did you ever tell me what all your hormone levels were/are?

       Hi Karen

      Thanks for your reply. When I asked my GP to look at the blood test results she did but never commented about them. I thought she would either say she thought I was peri menopausal or not or maybe they were inconclusive.  But she never said a word. I asked to be referred back to a gynaecologist. I saw one last year because heavy periods were a problem and was told it was too early for HRT and I was offered a progesterone only pill, transenamic acid, womb ablation or natural remedies. I said I would wait it out and see how things went. That was my plan at the time as heavy periods were a nuisance but that was before the hot flushes got worse, the brain fog became bad and the anxiety kicked in! I have been advised to take Sertraline but have always refused because I don't feel comfortable taking them. I think my GP has given up trying to get me to take them and said to try HRT. I've been on Elleste duet 1mg for just two weeks. I don't like taking anything but am so fed up with being like this; struggling along with work and three children. I'm sure my family are fed up with me.  I wish you all the best.

    Did she tell you what your estrogen and progesterone levels Are? I'm surprised she'd offer you hrt without your fsh being higher. I am 41 with a host of crazy symptoms. My fsh is 6.8 also. My estrogen was 44 at cycle day 2 and 78 at cycle day 16. My cycles started changing slightly around the time I started with the weird symptoms. I hope you find some help!

      Hi,

      My GP didn't say a word about my results. I did ask her, she looked at the computer screen and turned back to me and started talking about HRT. I have been to many different GP's with ongoing symptoms of tiredness, anxiety, heavy periods, sinus problems, viruses, headaches, a foggy head, terrible PMT and feeling unwell every day. I have been like this so such a long time but put it down to being overtired and life in general as my periods have always been regular. I was offered sertraline many times but said I didn't want to take an anti depressant, I've had blood tests to check everything and it all comes back normal. Which I should be happy about but I think there must be a reason for feeling unwell all the time! My GP has probably given me HRT as she doesn't know what else to do with me! I did ask to be referred back to a Gynecologist but she said they would probably put me on it anyway. I did want to wait until my periods have stopped and I am really in the menopause but it's all become too much! Best wishes to you.
