Blood tests

Posted , 3 users are following.

I was diagnosed with gout about 10 years go and a daily dose of Allopurinol keeps it nicely in check.

My doctor has  taken to demanding my presence annually for a blood test "to check gout levels". I can see no point. I have a tendency to gout, take medication to keep it under control and have no issues.

Why check "levels of gout" annually? I'd know soon enough if the medication was ineffective!

My guess is that doctors are not "supposed to" put people on medication with zero supervision.

i.e. it may be inappropriate to put someone on lifetime medication and then simply leave them to it.

This may not be a bad thing.

    Hi Nick

Your doctor is doing exactly the right thing. Your blood irate level should be monitored. As for you knowing if it is working - not necessarily. Your dose may need to be increased or decreased.

Secondly allopurinol is potentially toxic for the kidney and that too should be checked regularly.

I applaud your doctor's good sense.
