Blood Thinners

I had my THR exactly 2 weeks ago today and I'm recovering incredibly well. I'm walking without sticks indoors but use one stick when I venture outside on my daily walks. Like many others I'm having problems sleeping on my back although, as time goes on that is getting better.

For some reason with a hip replacement I have to take a blood thinning tablet every day for 5 weeks--I've been given rivaroxaban 10mg (Xarelto).

Although the information inside the medicine box makes no mention of alcohol I have read on a few websites that you shouldn't drink any alcohol while on Xarelto. Has anyone else been prescribed this blood thinning tablet and, if so, what have they done about an occasional glass of wine?

Speaking just for myself, I took the same blood thinner in the morning and had an occasional single glass of wine in the evening, always with food or just after. No ill effects as far as I was aware. Cheers and good health!

I didn't worry about the occasional glass although my tolerance for alcohol was completely shot.

Even half a ginger beer had me giggling! 😁😄

I was on the blood thinning injections. Obviously the injections are to thin your blood to prevent blood clots, and alcohol also thins your blood so i think if you obviously accidently cut yourself it could cause more difficulty in stopping the bleed but other than that i dont think it will cause much harm but i personally didnt drink whilst on the injections

Had my last one of these today !  I have had alcohol- even a bottle of wine (to see if it would help me sleep - it didn't).  No ill effects but not sure of reasons to avoid.  I was alcohol free for almost four weeks but now have a beer or wine if I want if not taking strong painkillers!!!

Hi Sarah--am I right in thinking you did drink alcohol while taking the blood thinning tablets. The reason I ask this is that you mentioned that you were alcohol free for almost 4 weeks.

With Xarelto (Rivaroxaban), there was no mention on the included leaflet about not taking alcohol.  That being said, for both my post-op sessions, I refrained from alcohol for the 5 weeks.

I felt it was more important to be careful with my health as alcohol affects the blood vessels, also I had the opportunity to prove to my family (and myself) that I am not dependant on alcohol, but I actually think it's fine to have the odd glass of wine.

    Best wishes

Yes, it's strange that the leaflet with the drug has no mention of alcohol but I'm aware of the potential problems. As you say, there's probably no problem with the odd glass of wine. Thanks for your reply.

I think that if there was a problem with a 'normal' amount of alcohol, they would definitely have printed it on the instruction sheet.

Hi don. I too am an the same blood thinning tabs. Luckily for me I'm not a wine lover. Seems everyone goes at a different pace, am using stick indoors. My op was 12days ago. Being careful as dislocation seems easily done. The fact I'm not getting any pain makes me wonder if I am walking around indoors enough. What do you think.

From what I've been told by the hospital, and read on on this forum, it's important to walk as much as you can. As a result, I now walk outside on the street every day with one stick --I increase the length each day and I'm now up to about 30 minutes at a time.

I had my op 17 days ago so I'm delighted that I'm able to walk so well so soon. My main problem is sleeping on my back--it just doesn't work for me so I'm very tired during the day. I do have a nap in the afternoon which helps but I can't wait until the day (or night) I can sleep on my side again.

Naps are the best answer to sleepless nights, as well as plenty of pillows, changes of position (flex the good leg as much as you want) and my iPod with soothing music.
