Bloody mucus in poo, what is wrong with me?

Posted , 6 users are following.

I am a 21 year old female and have been experiencing (mostly) bright red blood in my poo for the past couple of months. At first it didn’t happen very often, but has gradually got worse so I bleed with nearly every bowel movement now. Sometimes I feel like I need to rush to the toilet, only to release gas and bloody mucus. This happens a lot. I also get very bloated sometimes, and have stomach pain. Just the other day I got the flu, and that has caused me to get chronic diarrhoea with blood. Normally I won’t go to the toilet more than 3 times a day at most, but now I’ve got the flu I am going at least 10 times a day.

Last year I had digestive issues and was told I probably had IBS. At that point I had no bleeding, but now I am getting very worried as it is happening with every bowel movement.

Any ideas on what the issue could be? Also what foods should I maybe avoid eating?

Thanks

    Hi

Were you or are you on any medication at the moment? Some medication can have adverse effects and may trigger the symptoms you are currently experiencing, or it could simply be that your IBS has evolved and worsened.

    Please see your GP asap.

At this point I wouldn't like to suggest anymore than I have.

No I haven’t been on any medication. I was given peppermint capsules for my IBS but stopped taking them as it seemed to make it worse. I have an appointment booked for this Thursday, I just hope I feel a bit better before then! Thanks!

Do you get bloated? Do you have loud rumbling sounds from the top of your stomach down towards your lower abdomen? Does this happen independently, just before you feel the need to visit the bathroom or not at all?

I get very bloated, recently only occasionally, mostly when I eat bigger meals. However a while ago I was nearly always bloated! On occasion I get the really loud rumbling sounds too, like my whole stomach is almost vibrating!

Mostly I get it before I feel the need to rush to the toilet, or sometimes I’ll be very bloated before bed and need to go first thing in the morning, and will have stomach cramps and bleeding.

I don’t tend to have bloating or stomach cramps unless I need to visit the bathroom!

OK, so you could try charcoal tablets for the bloating and rumbling - these can be found at any chemist. I found them very useful, as I did peppermint tea,

Try cutting out processed foods, eating more wholesome foods such as fruit and vegetables but beware of leafy greens and some fruits such as apples. Cut out nuts and wheat. Also, if you tend to have a glass or two, cut this out for the next few days.

Only a couple of months ago I was opening my bowels sometimes 45 times a day although I didn't have the bleeding. Having been given my diagnosis I have made significant changes to my lifestyle and am now drug free and only visit the bathroom once or twice a day.

Good luck for the visit to the GP at which, if I were you, I'd request a referral to the gastro clinic at your local hospital as I feel they will be bet placed to give you a full diagnosis.

Bright red blood generally associated with hemorrhoids or anal fisher. As you have already been advised, best to have a visit to your GP and if necessary a Gastroenterologist.

Lots of diarrhoea can cause haemorroids which can cause bleeding.  Bleeding from this is bright red, fresh blood.  You may also have fissures.  However, ask your doctor for a fecal calprotectin test to check for IBD.  If your inflammation levels are high, a colonoscopy would be done to confirm IBD.  Bleeding should always be investigated.
