Boat like dizziness

Hello,
Sorry if this is too much to read but have to get this out.
I am 27 years old make and had been dealing with a boat like dizziness or floating/swaying feeling for about a year now. Doctors have ran numerous tests, including MRI, blood tests, visited ENT and Neurologist but nothing can be identified what the cause is. I had gone in to the ER first week I got sick, back in late october, and they gave me IV and said I was dehydrated. About a week or two after that I had gone to see my general doctor for eat discomfort and she said that both eats were swollen and red and have me antibiotics and eat drops to help. Once the pain had gone I noticed that I had a sense of imbalance where it felt like I was leaning to the left in which I had returned to visit my doctor. She first had said it was vertigo or positional vertigo and to take some meclizine for the nausea and do these movements to help. Something similar to the Epley. Had done that for a few weeks and noticed nothing significantly changing. I then forced myself to go back to work thinking if I stayed busy it will eventually take it's leave.
December came and I had been working half days since I struggled to even drive to work and stay in the lab that I worked in. My last week I tried going to lunch with co-workers and when I got there felt dizzy lightheaded sweaty and felt like I was going to pass out. After that week I had scheduled a visit with my doctor to look further into my situation. I had taken an MRI in early February which came back normal. Many blood tests taken came back normal. I had visited an ENT in March ,who seemed to barely do a check up, in which she tried to describe my condition being caused by Atypical Migraines. Told me to take some vitamins that have had some success in alleviating symptoms which I believe were magnesium and vitamin b12.
I then visited a Neurologist in June, which I only had one visit with, and seemed to take interest. He sent me to take a EEG, which came back normal. Had me take a sleep apnea test I'm which tests showed I had sleep apnea, Rented a machine for sometime but did not see any improvement.
I had another visit with my regular doctor to check any other options, in which I took an EKG a copper urine test and more blood work all coming back normal. She had sent me to talk with a Psychologist in which I didn't see the reason for but did anyways and talked about how anxiety and stress can be triggering my symptoms. I tried excercise that she recommended which help me with relaxing but not with my symptoms.
Off and on through the months I had episodes where I felt very weak nauseous and sick. Id lay in bed trying to just deal with it and let it pass. In late August I had visited my doctor again to look at anything else, and she had suggested that , like the ENT and Neurologist, migraines had maybe been the reason why I feel swaying boat like dizziness and prescribed me with Nortiptyline. Started with low dose of 10mg. About a month later increased to 30mg which to this day November am still taking.
All this time throughout the year I feel somewhat better but it seems like every month I feel little if any difference. Comparing last November to this November, big difference , but not to the point where I can continue to work, workout, go to movies, concerts. Which I was doing regularly with no problem other than occasional hangover. I'm barely able to make my way to the grocery store and the bank nowadays. I'm missing out on weddings and birthdays and family get togethers. So much I feel I am missing out on. I know my condition isn't the worst but definatley not easy to deal with day to day. I feel like I will feel 100% back to normal, but doesn't feel like anytime soon. Any feedback would be appreciated, sometimes feels like I'm alone with this and sometimes hard to see the brighter picture.
Thanks for your time

So I have mal de debarquement which I got not long after an episode of being really sick (nauseous and ended up in the ER). I believe I somehow got set into a bad brain motion, like the motion of a boat. It's like instead of my brain getting back to its regular theme, it somehow is in a bizarre loop. Anyways, I thought I would mention this to you since you sound like you have similar issues. I take 20mg of amitriptyline and 37.5mg of Effexor. Overall it's helped me cope but I am now 2 1/2 years w this syndrome. If you think it might be MdDs Dr Cha is a good person to contact. Just know that with time everything will get easier. I still have this condition but I am living life to the fullest. I just see it as a challenge and something I have to deal with. But it's my new norm and life has to go on. Btw I take klonopin at night before days where I know I will have a lot going on. Best of luck. Hang in there.

Hi thank you for response,
I'll ask my doctor about amitriptyline and effexor. What kind doctor diagnosed you with MdDs?

Hi Josh,
I'm 29 and have had idiopathic vertigo/dizziness for 12 years now so I know how it feels to be young and have this steal your fun times away. I also know what it's like to go to doctor after doctor with no relief in sight. I still spend many many days in bed.
It wasn't until this year that I was diagnosed with atypical menieres by a neurotologist (neurologist that specializes in neurological disorders of the ear). If you have one in your area, I suggest seeking one (neuroTOLOGIST) out as they really are a big help in making a correct diagnosis.
One difficult part about vestibular disorders is that they can be tricky to treat and doctors don't seem to know much about them.
Do you remember what happened to make you first feel dizzy? Did you wake up one day like this or were you sick? Did you travel by plane or boat?

I just got real sick one day and after recovering from that I had ear infection according to my doctor and after taking meds for that is when I basically started feeling this way.

Hiya Josh
I am so sorry you are going through all of this.. but you are not alone😢
I myself have been unwell for 2.5years.. all started when I collapsed walking back from a lunch break one day.. was taken to emergency.. had ct scan and ecg and heart Mri. All normal.
But my symptoms continued.. numbness.. unbalance.. vertigo.. jelly legs.. fatigue.. chronic headaches.. migraines.. chest pain..
Saw a Neurologist who found spinal lessions.. through multiple Mri's.. had a lumbar puncture test normal.. Neurologist said NOT MS..
Now havent been able to work or drive for last 8 weeks.. head constantly aches and feel pressure behind right eye.. the unbalance is the worst..
Have been a lab rat.. so many tests.. no answers.. was on Amitriptyline 10mg for 2 years.. but it didn't help much and the withdrawl coming off was the worst! Look into that before starting.
My anxiety now is fairly bad.. from not knowing what is happening..
Seeing a Psychologist.. but like you doesn't help with symptoms.
Hope you get some answers eventually..finally found a great GP doctor who seems to be really interested in getting to the bottom of this..
Good luck

I have had an audiogram after seeing an ENT but have not had the caloric test. Should I request one from my GP?

What did the audiogram show excactly? If there is hearing loss, at what frequencies (high or low)?

Hello Dr,
Seen you around and your answers appear to be very insightful. I have had what is likely VN (not formerly diagnosed as such) for 3 months with a 42% right ear hypofunction on the caloric test. My audiogram was normal.
I started VRT a month ago and have worked up to a point where it's almost at its most intense, yet minor symptoms and brain fatigue remains a problem. Is this expected?
Symptoms come on randomly and, while "minor," still frustrate me.
My most common symptom is a slight dizziness every time a car stops, whether it's at a light or parked.

Thanks for getting back. I feel like the VRT has plateaued for a while. Is this normal? My therapist has tailored it to be more intense, but I'm having another bad day today.
Could there be a component that hasn't compensated that just needs more time?
