Extremely alarming and the sad thing is people will read these articles and take them at face value. I just hope they read this much more informative article in the Guardian by Aseem Malhotra

Yes, it is sad that GP's are made scapegoats of.

But, the statins controversy is continuing.

GPs, by their own admission - I just talked to one of mine a few days ago - do not really know enough about the benefits, and potential devastating side effects , of the drug they ARE encouraged to offer to patients within the 'high risk' group determined by some rather vague Qrisk assesment.

    Scandalous!

I truly believe that those 'clever' people within NICE have hit a blind spot.

Thanks to both of you for highlighting these articles. It's always very worrying when you find out how many people making decisions about drugs have their fingers in the financial pie!. Even skeptical me was shocked about NICE. We so lack transparency in our NHS at all levels. It was a nice surprise that so many GPs refused.

Having been badly affected by statins and under pressure again to take them and having a sister that ended up in hospital by the time they'd tried her on the third kind, I would like to know more about your  group.

Hi Sonya I was prescribed statin last january i took them for 3 month's and felt so ill .I am 60 years old and I felt 90 on those I came off them and within 2 weeks was back to my old self I went back to the doctor and told them no way was i ever taking statins again  he just said that was my choice didn't seem bothered in the least so as far as i'm concerned that prove's the doctor's aren't convinced they are any good.

A friend just sent me a link to an e-book on this subject, the synopsis on the web page made VERY interesting reading - I already believed that the situation was far from transparent but the doctor who wrote this book is actually convinced that there are far more health issues from having too little cholesterol than too much.  I can't paste the link here as it will be moderated but the book is called 'The cholesterol myths: Exposing the fallacy that saturated fat and cholesterol cause heart disease' and is written by a chap called Uffe Ravnskov MD PhD.  I'm sure if you google the book name you'll find the web article and be able to read the lenghthy synopsis without having to buy into the e-book unless you want to.  I'm both surprised and not surprised if you catch my drift.  I was already convinced there was unclear and hidden agendas re cholesterol lowering meds but his comments have really surprised me as to how much of a myth it is.
