Bone cysts after a Total Ankle Replacement some years back.

I would like to hear from anyone who has had bone cysts after their TAR.

My Orthopaedic Surgeon has advised that I have a “manufactured” bone transplant,

rather than use my own bone because one of the two cysts is a rather large one.

Apparently my cysts were possibly formed by my bones reacting to micro particles of plastic that wear away from the replacement.

Hopefully I will be more confident to undergo the Op with some Positive Feed-back from

here.  I had found a forum on here earlier dated back to about nine months ago but sadly cannot find the page again.

Thanks Esther

    Hello Esther

i am not sure what you about your problem. I had my TAR two and half years ago, but I am still limping badly and very bad tightness at the back of my heel area and also it is painful.. I have been to my surgeon today after having a nuclear ct scan to get results but I am afraid it was inconclusive. He is going to conference and he is going to discuss it with other orthopaedics.

i would be interested to know how your cysts were discovered.

    Do you live in U.K.

Any info would be great. Feeling pretty dispondant today.

      Hello Wendy,

Sorry to hear you are not having much luck with your TAR. I do remember that it took quite a few years before my ankle/foot settled down after the TAR. I limped for quite some time, as well. So I can tell you that mine took a while to settle down. I used to massage my ankle/foot every night to help speed up recovery and in fact I still do so quite frequently.

Last week I was called back to my Orthopod who did the replacement for my seven (7) year post op check and the two bone cysts showed up on my x-ray. So to get a better picture my orthopod requested a CT Scan and it showed much more detail and from these results his recommendation was to have an operation where he will drill into the cysts and remove the fluid and replace it with some sort off synthetic bone.  This synthetic bone will harden in a few years (hopefully).

To explain the cysts so I could understand he said that the outer edge of the larger cyst in particular, is like an egg shell - fragile and it could shatter, were I to have an accident involving the ankle now.

I have had a few good years with greatly reduced pain since the TAR so I am hoping that will continue again after this hic-cup is sorted out.

How did you damage your ankle injury and how long ago?  Mine was in a parachuting accident some 30 odd years ago.

I live in Australia. I am pleased to meet you.

      Kind Regards Esther
