Bone Donation and giving blood

Posted , 10 users are following.

Hi am 5 months post hip replacement and asked Google can I give blood?

Anyone know the answer?

Also spotted that you can donate the bone you have removed. No one told me about this. Has anyone donated their old bone!!

Thanks in anticipation.

    Hi Julie,

usually the bone removed if not effected with disease i.e.: necrosis is sent to a lab for exam and donated as in the Authorization we sign papers before surgery in the US.My Bone was ground up and used to patch the hip to reinforce the area for the ball joint inset. Usually referred to as a graft.

Also donated blood for my own surgery before surgery . I was given one transfusion of 1 pint my own blood made me feel so much better the day of surgery in recovery.

The second THR was only blood platelets by iv to replace any blood loss.

After surgery blood donation depends on your doctor and blood tests.

Take care Heeling blessings sent your way!

    Hopexxx

      Hi

I am UK based and was asked about bone donation at my pre-op assessment. I was happy to donate and they did double check this with me immediately pre op. Otherwise the bone removed is just thrown away.

I am in  UK. Info re bone donation was in the preop information and also in consent form

i think it will be at least 6 months if not a year before you will be allowed to give blood and that assumes that you have no other reasons for being refused, such as having had a transfusion yourself. You could check up with the blood transfusion service

I am a ardent aphresis donor. I have been told that after major surgery, one has to wait a year to donate. That is what I was told several years ago when I had my shoulder resurfaced. Red Cross can give you a definitive answer.

I'm also in the UK and am pretty sure I donated the bits of bone and continued giving blood after the hip surgery. Had to stop after colon cancer though.
