Bone Fragments in finger

Given a severe laceration to the tip of a finger, resulting in fracturing the tip of the bone - if there were still small bone fragments under the skin, would these bone fragments dissolve and be reabsorbed over time? Or would they need to be surgically removed?

Right now the simplest and logical explanation is that not all bone fragments were cleaned out when being treated at the hospital given the location of the pain and how it feels.

I also assume x-rays would need to be done in order to verify if the related sensation/pain is due to bone fragments?

You dont say how long ago the injury was. An injury like this would take some time to heal and dont forget the fingertip is extremely sensitive and nerve endings may be involved. If the tip of the bone wasnt crushed it may heal and reattach, depending on how bad the fracture was , but if it was crushed then that would have been seen on the xray at the time and fragments removed. The fragments wouldnt be absorbed......they would be there forever and the healing process would probably form a protective shield around them causing a lump. Yes, only an xray will find out if there are any fragments of bone or even foreign bodies left in the wound.
