Bone Graft during THR

Posted , 4 users are following.

This week I have had my second hip replaced ( 1st one Feb 17 ) due to Perthes disease as a boy. The Perthes had caused flattening of femur head which then caused the pelvis to develop a flattened cup ( acetabulum ) too. Aa a consequence when the surgeon needed to form a hollow for the replacement acetabulum there wasnt really enough depth in the pelvic bone to accommodate this and so a bone graft was used to build up an area of the pelvis to provide support for the new cup. The main intention being to build a stronger pelvis which will improve the success of revision surgery and also to lessen the chances of early failure of the new hip.

If there is anyone out there who has any knowledge of how bone grafts affect the outcome of THRs or has had a similar experience please reply

I had a bone graft. Needed because of hip dysplasia. My hip replacement has gone great. 1 year out I'm doing really well. Do yr exercises and keep yr leg strong.

My son has bilateral leg perthes. I know how that goes. Good luck with yr recovery.

Thank you Denise. Glad to hear that - did the bone graft have any bearing on recovery ?  I am pleased they have diagnosed the Perthes in your son early. I think treatment has improved massively in recent years and his prognosis should be good and also should make a complete recovery. Best wishes with this

Hi Paul. No. I don't think the bone graft slowed recovery at all. I was a little more cautious but all went well.

As for my son. He is 25 now. Was diagnosed at 8. He's had 2 salte osteotomies. He will need a hip replacement in the next 10 years. Same as you. At least we know what to expect.

Good luck and be patient. 👍

    Hi Paul

I too had Perthes dz dx at age 4. Im a female. Had my 1st THR at age 35. I'm on my 4th hip now cuz I'm quite active having been a nurse 34 years and enjoyed horseback riding.

Just had my left hip replaced at age 64 due to bone on bone osteoarthritis.

Glad you're here. Hopefully someone can answer your questions.

Hi Vickie - really pleased you have done so well. Could I ask what part of the new hip joint failed each time to make a revision necessary please

    Hi Paul,

Sorry I can't help with your bone graft questions, but I'm pleased that you've now had your 2nd hip replaced and I wish you all the best with your recovery, Judith

    Hi Paul,

    I. I'm fine thanks, enjoying the sunny weather today. My hip hip feels really normal now, my op was almost 10 months ago. Just occasionally achy. Went skiing at Easter, hip felt fine, knees pretty rubbish!

It must be hard to be going through surgery again. I hope that your first hip is strong and bearing up well.

    All the best, Judith
