Has anyone taken MCHC (Microcrystalline Hyroxyapetite) or Bone-up for Osteoporosis. If so , does it help. My Osteoporosis is bad and taking prednisone is surley not helping me.

Hi Bella, I have Osteoporosis, which was diagnosed last year after 3 months on steroids so it was not the steroids that caused it but it is not helping now either. I have not taken MH but thougth I would share with you what I am doing. I have been prescribed Alendronic Acid but have decided to wait for my next Dexa scan in now 18mths (I was told I could only have one every 3 years) Each time I go to the doctors she tries to persuade me to go on AA but I am still resisting. I am only 50 and feel that there must be something better than this. I am currently taking Ultimate bone support from my health food shop which contains Calcium, Vitamins D£, and K2, Zinc and Boron. I eat lots of dark green vegetables and am careful about what I do. No extreme sports
I lift weights when I am feeling good too. I don't know if this is the right thing to do but felt that I had 3 years to see if I could improve or stabilise the OP myself and if not will start AA after my next Dexa scan. I hope this helps.

I am feeling the same as you. I don't want to take the drugs and my GP wants me to. I am not going to take drugs if i can control this osteoporosis with food, supplements and excercise. Thank you.

Yes, this is the form of calcium I take. I have also taken calcium citrate but I feel that the micronutrients in the other supplement are necessary for me, so I switched back. I read that it is more easily absorbed by people on pred. The supplement is not the only thing I've done to help my bone density, but it seems to have been helpful. I improved my bone density with supplements, good nutrition generally, and lots of weight bearing exercise (walking, Nordic walking, tai chi, wearing a weighted walking vest). My diagnosis, however, was not as bad as osteoporosis. Bone density t-score improved from -2 to -1.6 in one year.

Hi Bella,
Just within the past month, I have begun taking Calcium Hydroxyapetite for my osteoporosis. My chiropractor told me it is the best absorbed. I had previously been using calcium citrate. But I switched on her suggestion. I won't know if it is working for another year because I just had a DEXA scan in January. Insurance won't pay for another one for a year. But I have really bad osteoporosis (family genes) which caused a T8 spinal compression fracture in December. It is healing, but I am debating whether to try Forteo, which is what the doctor is recommending to me. I certainly do not want another fracture.
The irony is that I have been a walker my entire life, always very active. But I also had osteoporosis BEFORE taking the Prednisone, so I am not blaming that at all. We are between a rock and hard place, I know.
