Bone pain after ACL hardware removal

Posted , 4 users are following.

I had my ACL revised after it started locking (it didnt actually fix it), and after a year, i had the hardware removed as it was causing pain and sometimes swelling. a year on, i still get a lot of pain in the same area even though the screws are out, sometimes after the gym, or lots of stairs, but sometimes just randomly, like watching tv. has anyone else had this? I'm a 22yr old female, did ACL,MCL when 16, had ACL done with platella tendon, then MCL tightened, then last year ACL re-done using hamstring.

no-one seems to be able to tell me why it hurts, or even what it is. they suspect its is where the screws were, but cant say if it will go away etc, apparently im a bit of a special case!

thanks smile

I had knee surgery for MCL and a spiral break about 20 years ago, done in Italy in the ski resort and there at that time they almost always removed the metalwork about a year later. In the UK they announced no they didn't bother - but like you it caused trouble, causing swelling when I walked any distance because of a sinus along a screw which made it loose. In myself I felt much better immediately once it was out but I had random pain in that leg for years in various positions but mostly where the screws had been. My daughter has had the operation to stabilise the patella using the hamstring about 2 years ago and still has pain at times.

I find weather makes a difference - damp especially for me but also cold. Since some of the pain I got for a long time was a sort of shooting pain I assumed it was because of nerve damage as I have a long scar so the nerves running across the knee were cut during surgery. Some heal, some don't apparently.

My daughter had ACL surgery in 2014, one year later she had to have the screw(s) removed due to pain.  It has been almost 10 months and she has pain and a lot of swelling.  Just revisited surgeon and he said that the hole left from the screw can sometimes fill with fluid and cause pain.  He gave us the optiion of a bone graft to fix the hole.  I am sure you are special, but I guess there are a couple of you all out there.  smile
