Bone spurs: interesting info on road to recovery!

I love our sharing info &how it all helps us. I waited to post this so i could give full scoop. I've had the all the screams, tears, pain and aggravation as we all have had along the road to recovery. I was better off than most after a bilateral pkr as walker was gone at 3wks, driving at 4wks. Pushed myself through some incedibly painful scar tissue breakups with the help of an exceptionally well trained PT. DESPITE incredible flexion and extension- right was 150+ flex/full extension and left almost 150 w/full extension. I can sit in my camping(backpack) chair thats 8inches off the ground! I KEPT HAVING PAIN along the medial/inner part of ridge of patella on left knee. VERY tender to touch when flexed 30°. Could squat to chair, couldn't push up enough w left knee to get out wo help. Twisting/pivot aggravate it. The pain was increasing and unrelieved by cortisone shot at 5mo. I could walk 2miles in 45min then bike peddling for an hour NO pain. I rtnd to work for a month lite duty 8hr days.

Results: ARTHROSCOPY done today. Could not see any scar tissues BUT found BONE SPURS,regrowth of bone causing inflammation. Could not find anything else so stated, "lets hope this does it!"

One week short of 6 months. He said bend, move, rest, ice. Keep going. This is the first arthroscopic procedure of three i am not swollen and painful. Maybe after the knee surgery i have a new definition of "swollen &painful!" Haha. But i walked up n down some stairs then iced. No pain meds since surgery. Was sent home 1.5hrs after hour long procedure w/general anesthesia.

I was originally terrified of another procedure and NOT ready for more pain &swelling. Said prayers, had friends pray. Just goes to show, WE ARE NOT ONLY ALL DIFFRRENT but our OWN BODY'S react different each time. I'll give update after PT on Monday. After all, we ALL know how one day we're happy as clams and the next we can howling like a wolf on a full moon, lol.

Thanks all. Hope this was helpful.

We all say oh it's scar tissue, but as you've had proved sometimes it isn't! So glad you know what has been causing the pain & hopefully it will be gone now. Permanently!! I just wonder how many others that have been told they aren't doing enough have similar problems?!

Also what your story shows, is as you said, that the body's reaction to the same operation can be different the next time around!

I hope the rest of your recovery goes really well, but judging by your flex & extension you are more or less there. Just gotta keep it!

    Well done to you.

Thanks Chris and Marilyn. Both of you do a lot of encouraging on this forum. I always feel encouraged and it is what kept me going on some pretty dark days!

Im REALLY lucky i have a doc who listened and didn't blow me off. I get to take the wrap off at 48hrs, Fri morning. Looking forward to it!

Yes! Very exciting! The spiral of bad knees and what i was losing was awful! I empathize with so many people whose outcomes have not been "good" or "timely"- remembering how discouraged i felt after each set back. It was all this encouragement that kept me going!

My heart goes out to those who have had such struggles too, and I'm thankful for the encouragement that they've given too - because none of us know what might happen in the future and it shows how people who have struggled through, even though it's been a long and difficult journey, have hung in there and still got the best of the situation that they could.  Its a lesson for all of us!

      Looking forward to Fri then!

Don't forget you have worked so hard to regain the ability to bend & straighten your leg without the pain.

      Enjoy freedom from pain!😄😄

Hi I had  bilateral pkr 12 weeks ago (New Knee Caps) was you the same? was doing really good was walking around the house a 5 weeks unaided. Went to see consultant at week 7 and walked in and out unaided, was so proud. week 8 was hit with siatica in both legs that has taken me down. I am now back on a crutch to try and keep my posture correct. I feel like I am back to week 4. Did you have this problem? I am 48 and was told that I should be almost their now.. Feeling very dishartened. Not sure if its because I went back to work too early at 6 weeks and have a min 2 hr journey to work. How long was it before you felt confident walking out and about unaided? Any advise I would appreciate

A 2 hour journey and working at 6 weeks sounds very early to me, and add bilateral TKR's to that and it sounds incredibly hard!  I hope your back gets better soon!!!!

      Colette,

I felt good immediately walking after surgery but used a walker for3wks when i walked porch, sidewalk etc. They told me use it so i wouldnt favor one side and develop a limp. I thought i would have gone back to wk at 3mo but had a set back at 2mo, swelling flared and pain out of nowhere. (Turns out more scar tissue layer). I actuall went back to work at 4th month to month 5 and thats when these bone spurs rared their ugly head. I drive 30min to wk. I was on light duty- instead of 12hrs, i did 2wks at6hrs then 2wks at 8hrs. Was exhausted and fell asleep right after i got home. You MUST stretch your hips and legs. This will help sciatica. Google hanstring, abductor, adductor stretch. Longer and gentler is better than harder faster. You'll feel the muscle pull, dont force!. I use a band at my foot.

6wks is pretty early but if u needed to, what can u do? I was srtaight bilatrral pkr no patellar resurfacing.

I hope this helps. If u cant find exercises let me know. I'll try to get a link or pic for you. Discouragement KILLS! It eats at us and all the setbacks are just that, discouraging. IT GETS BETTER!!!! I JUST DID 15MIN ON MY BIKE PEDDLES with no pain after my arthroscopy yesterday for those bone spurs. Just breathe. We can DO this!
