Bony lump?!

hi all, I've had a stiff neck on one side now for months. I have a doctors appointment Monday to get it looked into but when I feel around on the stiff side I've recently noticed a lumpy bit. I dont think it's a lymph node because it actually feels like the bony side bit of the bone is protruding a little more than the others. I think the name of the bone part is called the transverse process?! does anyone else have this and know what it might be or have. it's not hugely different but enough to notice the difference from the other side.
