Boot to No Boot

Hello All,

I had my surgery for a trimallelor fracture on 15th April 2021. Last week I am given FWB and a moon boot. I have really no flexion in my ankle and was wondering how long does it take for me to be able to walk normal from here on. I am able to put about 40% of my weight right now after a week. Hoping it is some progress. However, my ROM is poor. My PT starts today and would like also to know how many sessions would I need on an average.

Appreciate some insights. Thanks everyone!

Hi! I am almost 10 weeks post op. I had surgery on April 7 to repair a lesion inside my talus. During the procedure they cut my tibia at the medial malleolus and put it back together with 3 screws. So, I am basically healing from a broken ankle. I was given the green light for FWB with the boot at 6 weeks. However, I struggled to put any weight for at least two whole weeks and then finally managed a few steps. It is very painful and I am still struggling to put full weight on my foot. I have been going to PT 3x/wk since about 7 weeks. PT is definitely helping but I still have terrible dorsiflexion. As of a week ago, I am starting to walk with my sneakers on and no more boot. If I do all of the stretches and warm up it helps me get started and I can manage a few steps. My walking steps are not not pretty but I hope it continues to get better and less painful.

My best advice is to take it slow. Definitely try to do PT at least 3x/wk. Be honest with your PT and let them know your concerns and your pain level. And be sure to do your stretches and practice walking at home, too.

Hi, Thank you for writing here for me. I think my therapy session went great. My physio stretched my foot for dorsiflexion and plantar flexion and it was painful and heard couple pops as well. He did tell me it is pretty normal. Once he is done with stretches, I put my boot back on and started to walk with one crutch, I couldn't believe I could do that until he asked me to. Later I did some exercises and started walking with no crutches. At this moment I felt I was ready to walk with no crutches but has no confidence in me to do so. Now at home, I am walking with no crutches but with the cam boot on. which he prescribed me to do at home and I am now scheduled for weekly twice physio and 3 exercises for me to do at home. My physio wants to get me into sneakers (Cam boot is restricting some movements during my exercises )and he said he will consult my surgeon's office today to talk about it. I will keep my progress posted. Thank you again. I am feeling very hopeful.

it will take time to gain back mobility in your ankle. take your time once therapy starts you will begin to see little by little weekly improvement. walking is the best exercise. and if you can walk in water or sand will help tremendously with range of motion in ankle movement. everyone heals at their own pace. time, ice , stretching and soon that moon boot will be off and your movin on In was at least 3 months in my case to gain back normal mobility. i broke one ankle and tore the ligaments in the other at the same time. i mean who does that? just slipped down one step. every once in awhile my ankles let me know when to rest. try not to over due it in therapy it can sometimes lead to small set backs in healing.

    sending good vibes your way.

Hello, Thanks for your suggestions. I will find out if my Therapy place has aquatic therapy for my foot, if so I will request to get some exercises in water. The cross legged standing is really a tough exercise I have right now and it promotes some amount of motion. My Physio have only concentrated on putting maximum weight on my foot and as long as I can for now. I am wondering if he do have plans for my flexion improvement in a later stage. I shall ask him tomorrow ( my second session) about it.

And trust me, ankle injuries stories are some of the craziest stories we will hear. You know "Murphy's Law". If I look back and remember how this all happened, I cannot believe that I broke my bones for that.

Thank you for sending me positive vibes. I will keep my progress posted here. I hope you are feeling better now take it easy on your ankle. 😃
