Both hips...?

Wondering shy there are so many posts by people who have to have both hips replaced.  Is this pre-exsting, or the result of the surgery on the first hip, creating aggravation to the other hip, which upto this point has not shown an sign of arthritis, as in my own case?

I think that sometimes the first hip is so bad that the other is not really noticed until the pain from the first has gone. My surgeon told me that there was very early changes in the other hip, but that it would be years before I would need it replaced. I certainly hope so

In my case, the left hip was the painful one - the X-Ray revealed osteoarthritis in that joint.  The other hip showed signs of wear, but not as bad, so presumably it is possible that it will also need seeing to in future, but is not painful so far.

    Hi susie

I was born with a genetic problem with my hips. Mine could have escalated into arthritis at any time in my life. I was just lucky I lasted till I was 45 before it started causing me problems. I had arthritis in both hips one was worse than the other but as the worst one got worse the other soon caught up. My surgeon wouldn't do both at the same time.I had the left one done first. While waiting for myself to heal I had other issues while healing from the op but not connected with the op. So my surgeon has made me wait 8 months before getting me back in. While I was getting over the left hip being done. A few days after the right hip collapsed putting me in bed for 3 weeks in unbelievable pain. But it was still too early for my surgeon to do anything about it plus all the other issues I coped with didn't help. He could have done my right hip at 3 months if it were not for everything else that happened.  So both hips affected from the beginning

My reason is a misdiagnosed Mri 2 years ago which showed I had synovitis. 20 physio therapy sessions later. I knew when physio wasn't working it was more than synovitis & a full body x ray in April this year (at a different hospital) showed severe advanced osteoarthritis of right hip & severe OA of left hip. 1st hip done 7 & half weeks ago & 2nd hip in 10 weeks time on 29th January.

Heavens I hope not as my other hip is alright!

In a bit of achy type pain last night and today does anyone think this is because I tried to give up my remaining crutch?  I felt at 10 weeks I should be walking without these now.

    Hi Susie,

I'm just about to go in for #2. Both mine were 'diagnosed' with advanced arthritis and in need of replacement in my first appointment with an orthopaedic surgeon. I'm 47. I let the surgeon decide which one to do first, as they both felt the same to me.

Best of luck Jordan. I'm waiting for no 2 as well & surgeon told me at end of May when he said no 1 needed to be done that other one also needed to be done soon (bone on bone) & that I would plead with him to do it within 12 months. I'm now having it done 4

Months after 1st hip. To be honest I can't wait to have it all behind me. When's ur op?

      Thanks,Gossip.

Surgery is tommorrow. A full 11 months after my first (that's how the waiting lists work where I am....). Looking very forward to it, especially since the first one left me with a bit of a leg length discrepancy!

      Good luck to you too!

Oh best of luck tomorrow. Keep us all posted. We're all here for each other. There's so much advice from everyone. I'm very lucky to have private insurance hence the early 2nd op. My surgeon purposely left my new hip side inch & quarter longer as my ball joint had disintegrated so badly but other side is almost as bad so it's suffering badly now. So I'm working very hard on strengthening new hip so I'll be balanced 5'9" bionic woman in January. I'll be thinking of u tomorrow. Do u know what time ur op is?

Thanks so much for your kind words and for sharing your experience! Interesting that your surgeon intentionally left your original side a bit longer. I don't think mine was intentional, but as you mentioned... my second hip is badly degraded and my right one is 'new' so it stands to reason that the degraded one, has lost some height.

Best of luck with the strengthening exercises. I am a true believer in the power of physio and rehab. I've no doubt that if you keep up the strenghtening that you'll be the 5'9" bionic woman in January!

My surgery will be at about 3pm Pacific time tomorrow.

Thanks again for the best wishes!

    Hi Susie ,

I was devastated when I was told at follow up appointment post-op Right THR that left hip's cartilage has gone from very mild (x-ray taken October 2014) to almost bone-on-bone May 2015 -

When I asked: WHY ??? I was told that hips are the same age ... made me even more upset -

Of course I shared this here on and low and below: so many were going to have their 2nd THR - I was not alone and I was not a freak !!!!!

so there already were signs of OA ...

    big hug
