Both the KNEE and HIP at the same time???

Has anyone ever had to have both the knee AND same side hip done at the same time??

I just found out today that is my imminent situation and i dont know how in the world Im going to physically and mentally get through this....especially 8 months after having my rotator cuff done!

Its simply NOT FAIR!

Has ANYONE experienced this? Id like to hear how and what to feel and expect.

That's scary stuff anyway you slice it. I'm in Canada so we do have Labour day here but with a u in it..lol. make sure to write down all your questions for your surgeon...it sounds like a long journey for you i am having enough fun with just a TKR...they "say" the hip is easier and from seeing people who have had both that appears to be true. GOOD LUCK....with your appointment and please do let us know the outcome. Donna

I should probably explain more, a hip is less painful than a knee, but it usually comes with a lot of restrictions like a no bending past 90 degrees no sleeping on your side, sitting is very uncomfortable for a while. ..there is a high risk of dislocation, so you don't want to be trying to do hip exercises then knee exercises..I just don't know how you could do the knee exercises when you have a hip replacement,..

    David,

my husband is 41/2 weeks PO for bilateral knee replacement. His PT said he is equivalent to his 3-4 month TKR patients.

Thats not to say the last 10 days haven't been the most exhausting because he starts aching in the afternoon and went to bed so early just to take a sleep aid and pain pill. Amazing what a day will bring to healing.

I had both hips replaced. 6 months ago and three years ago.

my husband and I are early 50's.

Two suggestions and observations as a receiver of THR and caregiver to bilateral TKR....

HIPS ARE EASY...IF you get ANTERIOR THR. My hubby checked on me twice a day...I needed very little assistance. I did all my own meds showered without help.

    KNEES ARE A DIFFERENT ANIMAL.....

because he did both he required a lot f assistance and if he had only done one, I can see HIPS are way easier.

BEST SUGGESTION AND GAME CHANGER FOR TKR....

my husband received 6 weeks of PT BEFORE his double knee replacements. Our PT is amazed and wished he had documented this.

as for getting both done....if it were both knees, yes. I can't imagine hip and knee, it doesn't seem right. You need the hip to help the knee and the knee to help the healing hip...

Its imperative to have a great knee Dr. Who will balance the ligaments...my husband had no swelling and no bruising....

you should fly to this Dr. He is truly the best.

Be patient...it's SO worth investigating, learning and waiting for the very best Doctor, and preparing your body (PT) health, mind and spirit.

    Dont be impulsive.

I waited against my husbands advice , t see my Dr. Who I had researched and also got lucky but waited three months just to see. I'm so glad. He ended up as my husbands Dr. Too. All the nurses said they would "only" have this Dr. Then it was the outside PT's and after care nurses....reputation means a lot.

    The best to you...

Let me understand the "lingo" so to speak.

A "TKR" is a total knee replacement (both knees?)

A Bilateral knee replacement is ( only ONE knee?)

Same question on THR- both hips?

      Bilateral hip replac...One side only?

My problem is this; one day before my rotator cuff south

      Sorry...i hit the wrong button...

I'll finish my story later...the dog is waiting for me

No . .a TKR is a total knee replacement. . one knee . . a Bilateral is on both knees, bi for two . . Same for the hip.  Bi stands for two . .

HERE'S MY SITUATION...HAS THIS HAPPENED TO ANYONE ELSE?

I just want to go back to work. It's been almost 9 months now since my rotator cuff surgery...havent returned to work and now my knee and hip sad(

What baffles me is that the day before my shoulder surgery Dec 10 2014 i was running circles around my 20 yr old students (im 54)

all of a sudden, 2 months into my shoulder post op as im resting and rehabbing...my leg knee and hip go lame??? For no reason at all!!! It makes no sense! They say my body is riddled with arthritus. But I've never had any trauma to me hip or knee...now ill be out for another year! Another summer wasted.

I just am speechless! I want to know why!

Did they do something to me when i was under anesthisia for my arm just to make more business? I know that's absurd...but i just don't get it!!!!

    Im so very dejected.

    Sorry to vent on you!

    David

Yes that's a bit absurd, perhaps ask for some blood work to see if you have some thing going on.

The arthritis in my ankles started out of the blue .. got up one morning, and . . . pain!  I would be quite certain that this is not some sort of action by the doctors to make money, and please be careful not to suggest that and leave yourself perhaps open to a slander charge. . . I did have a friend, a pneumologist, who suggested that once you damage a joint or bone, the liquids which are released into the system cause an auto immune response, which is basically what arthritis is.  Certainly, most of my joint problems started after an accident which fractured my spine. . but  I don't know.  I wouldn't look for conspiracy theories if I were you . .

Hello David, I am a 29 yr old female with avascular necrosis in both hips and both knees. I was on steroids for several months which is the primary cause of my problem. My surgeon recommended that I should get either my hips done first or knees depending on which bothered me more. As of now, its mainly the hips, yet I have days when my hip cooperates a little better while the knees get cranky. I just wanted to tell you that you should discuss getting the anterior approach on the hips which has minimal recovery time. Im hoping to get both hips done towards end of the year. Im terrified but trying to keep calm, thats all we can do-right!

      Dear TennyBenny, Clive and ALL...

Sorry I haven't seen your messages until now.

After my hip replacement in Jan followed by knee replacement in April I'm doing great now here in early August.

I'm done with physical therapy and now am doing my own personal training getting myself back in teaching tennis shape at the gym.

Currently I've just started slowly jogging on the treadmill and hitting balls from the baseline, corner to corner.

I must admit there was a time, especially with the TKR when I couldn't see the light at the end of the tunnel. But if you fight through the depression and keep pushing through the pain it all pays off!

I'm extremely happy with both my TKR and THR and should be 100% back to normal in about a month.

Btw...from what I was told...and now that I've lived it...you must do the hip(s) first to have a solid stable foundation for the TKR which requires much more work than the hips.

It was my experience that the THP was a breeze...the TKR was a "bitch." But once you make it past the 12 wk post op mark, and keep working hard on your rehab, it all pays off BIG TIME!

      Good Luck to all!

      David~

    Hi

I am waiting on TKR and THR of the left knee and hip, at the consultation the surgeon said he will only do one op at a time due to the strain on the body. Initially he was going to do the hip, but decided to do the knee by the end of the meeting. Just got news today that i need to go in for another scan  as the replacement joint and jig has to be a one off, due to the past breaks in the fumer/ tib and fib years ago in a rta, and the leg was left shorter, with some alignment issues.

Ithis is in the Uk by the way.
