Botox helpful or not

Learned a lot from these postings. I appreciate for your advice. 55 year, male, good health; had barium swallow, ct scan, & manometrey. The symptom is everything written on this site. Doctor said, \"not sure\" but looks achelesia & I have to get botox injection in mid august. The 'not sure\" after all test & suffering surprised me. I asked him why botox if uncertain, he said botox will relieve you for few months and will give us time to decide. Here in U.S sometimes cost is considered important in health insurance, & not sure if suggestion is cheapest in cost. I am thinking of switching to better health insurance but it is not possible before jan'2011. The doctor's doubt concerned me in addition to the botox recommendation. Better to wait four more months for 2nd opinion or go for this botox? Any advise.[list:abfe87ebd9][/list:u:abfe87ebd9]

    Hiya Johannes,

im over in the UK but was recently diagnosed. Im awaiting the Heller's op & fundoplication in mid Aug. My doctor told me about the botox option however he said because of my age (being young,37,i dont think of myself as young for sure) that the best route was the operation as this gives the longest lasting results. I was told that with botox if I was to have it I would need it repeating every year along with a gastropscope every 6 months so it was a no brainer for me really. He said that the botox gives better results in people older (not sure why) but its still only a short term fix. I would hazard a guess that your health insurance is forcing the cheaper option as the way forward. Its certainly a good stop gap but maybe the Heller's myotomy or possibly even the balloon diallation would be the best way forward and worth considering when the effects of the botox have worn off or maybe even before if your able to get your health insurance to cover it. I know many people on here have had a good response to both methods.

All the best with whatever route you go for. Keep us posted on how things go. Paul :boing:
