bowel prep and colonoscopy experience

Having scanned the internet to find out about other people's advice and experience, I want to let anyone facing a colonoscopy know what was like for me. It was absolutely okay. People say the prep is the worst part and it was a bit tiresome. I did a two and a half day special diet followed by clear fluids only and Picolax. It was nearly 48hrs without food but the Picolax wasn't as bad as I expected. In fact, I kept thinking it couldn't be working as I wasn't glued to the loo. I think the main thing is to prepare and plan for the prep and the procedure - making sure of having all the things needed for the prep diet and for during the clear fluids and then prep. Barrier cream (Sudocream) and moist loo paper were helpful, and having done 2.5 days of the low fibre, high carb diet must have helped as well. The only real problem I had was that I worried that the Picolax wasn't being effective enough so I went for my appt in dread that my bowel wasn't clear. But the nurse explained that as long as you go through the stage where you're passing just watery stuff, it's okay. And it was.

Re the procedure itself - I had a good consultant and the nurses on the Unit were very nice. Only problem was a mix up with the time of my appointment which left me waiting longer than anticipated. I felt sick with anxiety, little sleep and the after - effects of the prep on arrival. However, I asked to be given as much sedation and pain relief as possible and told them I was anxious. The sedation took the edge of things as did the analgesic but I could grab the Entonox when needed for the times when the doctor was steering the tube around the bends. It was over quickly and there was no point where it felt really awful at all. I watched progress on the screen and felt absolutely fine afterwards, although a little out of it from the sedation of course. So my advice to anyone facing this procedure is to carefully read all the info the hospital send you, contact the Unit if you're concerned about any aspect of the procedure or prep, and follow the instructions to the finest detail. And to plan ahead and get everything in house that you need and that will help you through the prep. And don't be afraid to let them know you're anxious - if you are. I hope this helps you if you are worried about having this procedure done - the whole thing really was okay and nothing like what I'd built up in my mind and from reading one or two horror stories on the web.

Just found this site,I'm due to have a colonoscopy on the 27/8 I'm stressed out already because of the prep, I've two sachets of picalax and I'm to take one at 8 am and one at 4 pm. I've read horrendous stories on other sites. Will be glad when it's all over, thank you for those who have commented, your comments are not as scary as others I've read.i had a barium follow through ten days ago but obviously there wasn't enough info.

Thank you everyone for your comments I got my letter in July for my colonoscopy on 27 th august I've been terrified of the prep as like Fred's wife I get sore with diarrhea all the time. It's been hanging over me all these weeks and I just want it over with. I'm going to eat very little for a few days before I take the picolax. I've read some horrendous stories on other sites so I'm glad to read these ,thank you.

Does anyone have evidence as to whether a less full stomach makes it easier?

I ate a very bland diet for a few days before taking the picalax. It was not nearly so bad as XPrep and another I once had.

Thanks Derek . Not sure what to eat though, can I have chicken soup? It says broth. I'm going to eat very little anyway.

For a few days before I stuck to low residue foods like fish, chicken, potatoes, white bread and rich tea biscuits.

My write up said clear soup so I bought consome.I also drank Bovril as it said not to have milk in tea or coffee. I suppose you could strain some of the other soups.

Make sure that you drink as much as you can right up to the last minute to avoid getting dehydrated. I was going to get up early to do that but I slept in and it was too late to drink anything and then my procedure was delayed for about two hours.

Remember it is the bad experiences that people tend to write about.

Before having mine I asked friends and relatives. None had a problem with the procedure. Some who are American have them two yearly as part of their healthcare. I had about three twinges during mine that made me swear but that was all.

Hi all I'm new to this and probably you are fed up with answering this but..... I have a colonoscopy tomorrow at 8:30 am and had to take 20 senokot at 10am then one picolax at 2pm, another at 7pm. I have had 3 small amounts of diarrhoea but nil else no gurgling, no discomfort, nothing and I'm really stressing that it's not working, this is an emergency colonoscopy out of the blue pits CT scan for acid reflux so already freaked out. Can it take long to work cos I can't take another week like this if it's cancelled?

    thanks in anticipation

I was about ready to take my second dose before it started in earnest.

In my case I had to take the first dose at 8am and the second at 1pm for a 10am appointment the next day. It was 2am before I stopped and was able to go to bed.

Are you drinking as much water as instructed as you can easily become dehydrated.

You may have a long night on the toilet ahead of you when it starts:-)

Good luck with it and the procedure. Don't forget to set your alarm. I slept in and had to dash there but fortunately the hospital is only a five minute walk away.
