Bowel problems

Does anyone else with Coeliacs disease suffer bowel problems. I have been coeliac for 20 years and still frequently have to go to the toilet, (up to 5 times a day) especially in the mornings, just after waking.

Has this always been the case, or has it started in recent years? I have found that a lot of manufactured gluten free foods contain xanthan gum and E464 because gluten free food doesn't bind very well (particularly gluten free bread). Both of these ingredients can cause excessive wind and diarrhoea/mucus. Perhaps you could start using a food diary to identify foods which can cause problems. Also, people with Coeliac disease can end up with more food intolerances. I have a few, including fructose, soya and dairy. It might be worth looking into.

Thanks for your reply. The condition seems to be worsening. I will look at dairy allergy I think. My doctor reckons all coeliacs have frequency of bowel movements. It's now driving me mad, but it only happens in the mornings.

Also, bear in mind that if you are anxious about your condition, it might also make you need the toilet more frequently. Yes, do look at dairy intolerance and also other things, as stated before. Keeping a food diary is the best way, you just need to remember to write everything down that passes your lips.

    Hi Christine,

I was diagnosed as Coeliac 3 years ago and am intollerant to many foods. I have had bowel issues too. The FODMAP diet works best for me and also taking strong probiotics.

    Best wishes
