Bowel problems after RT..

Posted , 2 users are following.

Looking for a bit of advice...

I completed  my RT 10 days ago but have been to hell and back ever since due to bowel problems. Some days I can get a movement, others nothing. Whoever said try not to strain must be a comedian as I could not avoid this with the obvious result of haemoirrids flaring up. Much pain, blood, mucous, you name it. Backside on fire 24 hrs/day. At this time, I do believe the cure is worse than the disease. Any advice on OTC medications will be very welcome.

Thank you

Suggest you speak with your oncology team/clinical nurse sepcialist or at the very least your GP. Blood/Mucous can be colon associated and something that needs to be seriously checked out.

    Commiserations Tom,

Try initially,  a Proctosedyl applicator.   Then try an Harris dilator coated with a small amount of Proctosedyl,  a smidge of 1% hydrocortisone cream and a small amount of lignocaine.  Take salt-water baths daily.  Apply Savlon or equivalent when dried off.

    Good luck.

Sorry for abbreviated post.  Had written a longer one ( and hopefully funnier ) but I use an ipad which eventually becomes over-sensitive and wipes content.

Yes,  it's called Radiation Induced Proctitis.  It should start easing inside a month.  Until then,  it's red hot bricks and /or pebble-dashing.  What I listed,  worked beaut for me.  Yup,  I know about the To Hell and Back.   R I P makes Audie Murphy's out of us all !

      Dudley,

You were spot on...My GP came to see me at home and diagnosed 'Acute Radiation Proctitis'. She prescribed Proctosedyl ointment + Internal Applicator and Codeine 30Mg x 1 for any pain. After 2 days, the Medication seems to be working...

      Thank you.

    Dudley,

Good advice. I have managed to obtain a GP appoitment on Wed PM so if he does not offer this a solution, I will request the suggested medication then.

    Thank you

Have you considered plain old water? No not to drink for I expect you are supping the legendary 2ltr p day. As an enema. It is low tech but it breaks up the log jam and provides some lubrication.

Thanks Eddie.  I have considered this, however the good news is that things are on the 'go' so the urgency for an enema has passed (excuse the pun!).

I will continue with my appointment to seek GP's advice and prescriptions for the  medications required to help resolve my bowel problems..

No problem Tom. A friend of mine is going through what you have but he didnt have the blood/mucus. I had severe bleeding for over 8 days in November last year and it turned out that I had a major issue in my colon. I had initially thought it was haemoirrids like most of us blokes do but it wasnt. They did a colonoscopy and I had some pre cancerous polyps removed. I am now on surveillance for colon cancer as well as my prostate cancer monitoring. I have now learnt that rectal bleeding needs proper investigation.
