Bowel Rest for bowel resection
Posted , 2 users are following.
Has anyone had the surgery where the give you a colostomy (Descending) to let your bowel rest.
They staple the lower colon and in 4-6 months they give you a bowel resection.
I just got the colostomy bag a week ago and was told that what is left in the lower half may empty out...
Well today I have had some of the biggest cramps since the surgery and sure enough I eliminated from my bum.
The only thing is that I have had no movements in my bag (I have been consistently evacuating since the surgery)
Any one else experience this and have thoughts?
Thank you,

I had the same with an emergency surgery and temp colostomy, actually just did a colonoscopy prep tonight for a pre-op colonoscopy tomorrow and I am a nervous wreck that I might wake up to hear it cannot be reversed for some reason.
I would gave "glycerin liquid suppositories" before trying to push anything out, as sewage will occasionally form almost like a glue stick, and you don't want to be stuck unable to push it out without a suppository to dilate the down there to make it possible to push out.
Mine are always very lodged in there or almost like sticky, so I don't bother trying without a suppository anymore, afraid I met overexert and blow something out.
Good luck with getting through your reversal!

Also I normally took stool softener unless it was liquid, then I'd adjust diet for that, you will become an expert incredibly fast.
One thing I was never told of changing my bag too much could cause a superficial skin tear, which can make life miserable getting it to heal so be sure to change 3-4 days.
Also I got a skin reaction to Hollister bags adhesive and a switch to Coloplast Convex bags (different adhesive) cleared up a huge rash almost immediately, so be sure to see a colostomy doctor ASAP with issues as self diagnosis has led me to weeks of unnecessary misery.

Hi Rommon,
Thank you for responding to my question. I am now three weeks out and still have waste exiting my rectum. Since this post my stoma has been quite consistent. The other day was alarming because I had some blood in my stool that came from my rectum and I was nauseated. Other symptoms seem to point to cancer so I called the Dr. haven't heard back but it could also be any number of things associated with my current problems. My big concern is I cant seem to string a couple of good days in a row and I am supposed to go back to work pt in a little over a week!
I understand whole heartedly about fears regarding a reversal I try not to let myself go there, one day at a time. Mine wont happen until next year. When is yours? Please keep me posted.
Thanks again for taking time to answer my concerns.
Heres to a quick and healthy recovery for both of us!
