Bowen technique?

Eileen has posted on here about the Bowen Technique...I have found a lady very nearby. With the pain that I have, I want to give it a try, my question is....do they need to also be an Osteopath/Physiotherapist as well....this lady isn`t. Would it make any difference? Thank You....

None at all - most Bowen practitioners have trained in Bowen and while there are physiotherapists who have learnt it, they then tend to incorporate the moves into their physio practice rather than doing pure Bowen sessions which mostly last an hour. The technique is so gentle it can't do any damage to anything, unlike physio where a lot of damage is possible by a non-qualified person. The Bowen practiioners I have been to have done training courses that are similar to what many osteopaths have done. If your local lady is registered with one of the umbrella organisations I would say you have nothing to worry about - they don't need to be members of an HCP branch.

I'd say call her and book a session! Like I must when I get home...

Thank you everyone (especially Eileen!) I now can`t wait to get booked up!  The only reason I really asked is, I have had massages in the past, which the therapist thought were "gentle" but they made me a lot worse!  With Fibromyalgia as well as Polymyalgia....one has to be very careful!...can`t afford more pain....Thanks again...

Yes - massage is VERY different kettle of fish! In massage the actions do tend to release cytokines  (the inflammatory substances that cause our symptoms) from the various places they are "stored" in the body, especially muscles. So the next day you probably felt as if your PMR was flaring. In the longer term it is OK once you have washed them out of your system but in the short term - not good! I know to expect it and that it will get better but it can be unnerving.

If you get onto advanced Bowen some of the movements are "interesting" - for want of a better word! But even so, all are gentle on the muscles themselves.

Linda, Bowen Tecnique is nothing like physio. They are more sort of gentle, lightly pressing type movements. I found it hugely beneficial. Pam.

Hi Linda. I have had four sessions with my Bowen therapist and can highly recommend it. It's very gentle and rebalances the body and it's functions. I have lost a lot of the water retention that's been troubling me and feel much more positive. I feel like I've had a spring clean! My therapist is also an Osteopath, but the two therapies are nothing like each other. I found another Bowen lady who isn't an Osteo. I just chose my one because she was nearest. Good luck. Angela.
