Bowens disease and thinning skin caused by prednisolone

Posted , 5 users are following.

hello all. Have been taking pred for 3.5 years and recently developed scaly red patch on lower leg. gp diagnosed Bowens disease and prescribed efudix . Just small scab remaining after 3 weeks treatment so hoping this will now go. Also noticed thinning skin and wondered if others have had this side effect from pred and what they did about it. Tried previous post but dog was sick before I completed so am trying again. Thanks for staying

AllyCD, while taking Prednisone I definitely had thin skin and a lot of bruising. Was on Pred for about 4 years. When on small doses and now zero it appears my skin is returning to more normal. Good luck, hope problem clears up soon!

Thank you for both comments. Down to 4.5 mgs now so perhaps may see a difference soon. It seems quite a long journey with not just a few bumpy patches. What an odd and unexpected illness it is.

Yes, AllyCD plus the overwhelming amount of wrong information. My Rheumey had me on the wrong path, I was in trouble till I found the forum. The advise, information and help I received from the forum got me through my journey. Hang in there you can beat this damn condition. The journey is ways smooth, I had some very rough spots, but I made it. Funny thing was I always just got the point where I just wanted to manage the inflammation with the least amount of Pred. Good luck on the rest of your PMR journey!🙂

      ally,

My skin would just rip at the least bump. I found wearing some kind of forearm and calf protectors helped. I bought stuff on Amazon the cyclists use on arms or legs. I actually found a Chinese product used for calf support but it fits my arms and this has protected me without making me sweat.

Right now I am on 4.5 mgm and one morning while yet dark I bumped my forearm against a door handle , without any protector on, and my skin did not rip- just bruised so that's progress for me age 78.

A few of us swear by not using soap products and using good moisturiser to reduce the tearing and thinning. Diprobase or Doublebase type products are excellent - available in the UK at most pharmacies and Amazon stocks them elsewhere and the delivery is OK if you have Prime

Have ordered Diprobase for starters. Thanks for the pointers. Whilst begrudgingly accepting skin is unlikely to return to that of a 17 year old, I must be able to do better than at present! Wondering what other surprises are in store but one thing is certain, without this forum I would be a lost soul.
