BPH - Toronto, Canada - Options?

Posted , 6 users are following.

Hi,

I am 56 and have been diagnosed with BPH. I had a CT scan, Ultrasound and Cystoscopy. As per my urologist, I have a small prostate, some thickening of the bladder wall and some limited obstruction. I urinate twice at night due to pain in my lower abdomen. I take Tamsulosin and the only improvement is that I can urinate easier at night. Obviously I did not have a good night sleep in more than four month and a low level lower abdominal pain that never goes away.

I haven't talked more details with my urologist as I didn't know what to ask. Now things have changed after spending my holidays reading this forum.

What are my options here in Toronto, major and minor procedures? What is covered what is not by OHIP? What are the requirements to have that procedure accepted as a medical procedure and claimed on the Tax Returns, in Canada or abroad?

Thank you,

dg

For the last 6 years my PS went up from 0.7 to 1.00. I had it done twice this year, once in March for my physical and once in at the end of August and both times it was 1.00. My father had prostate cancer so that is why I am watching it.

I saw my urologist today and he is of the opinion that it is prostatitis and he changed my medication to Rapaflo hoping that I can tolerate it better. After two month if there is no improvement he plans on putting me on antibiotics. The cystoscopy did not show any problems just the bladder neck a bit tight. Inside the bladder there are minimal Trabeculations.

Hi there, I'm also in the Toronto area and wondering if there is any updates to this. I imagine when people don't come back they either figured it out or learned to live with it as best they can.

I learned to live with my BPH for many years with Flomax and daily Cialis. The Cialis is self prescribed and keeps me ready when I need to be. 58 years old, still in great shape, sex about 4-5 times a week and I guess no retro. It is hard for me to tell as I have been taking flomax since 38. I have yet to increase the dosage. I tried other drugs and had complete retro.

    Can you have partial retro?

Now I have to mention that I get up a minimum of 3 times a night even with my meds. I have to time if I go to a sporting event as I need to sit to pee, and I have not had a good nights sleep in years. It is amazing how much sex means to me. LOL

I suspect a surgery is coming and this post peaked my interest as Canada is usually so far behind. It was interesting to see that PAE is covered now. My urologist is not very proactive and simply wants to see me once a year and write a prescription. He is even less personal due to COVID.

I'm in Courtice area near Oshawa and would love to find a better Urologist for sure.

I think that you have some very experienced and forward-leaning urological surgeons in Toronto and Montreal. Please PM me should you want to discuss more. Thanks. Mike
