BPPV? Please help

Hi Guys,

So in the past few months I've been having this weird dizziness that's triggered by movement.

Here are my symptoms:

The dizziness is not like spinning vertigo, it's more like my there's an internal rocking and "dropping" and some times when I walk/ stoop/ pull something heavy/ squat/ sit from standing up/ stand from sitting down , it felt like the ground is moving.

Digital screens are sometimes triggers too. especially when scrolling.

Standing on one leg feels unstable and as i try to balance, the ground feel like moving

the worse is when i'm marching in place. I will feel like the ground is moving so much.

washing the dishes is also a trigger. I will feel like my body is moving.

Rolling to the left is a trigger for me as well

lying flat is a trigger too

When I sit and be still , i'm fine, no internal rocking, etc

A little History: Before this happened, I happened to use a Q-tip to clean my left ear (I know right) . My ear was plugged after that (pushed wax too far into the ear). the next day, I spent 24 hours lying on left side, doing everything I can to push it out, and I even use a comedone suction to my ear!! (i was so reckless) . Needless to say , the next day I feel dizzy. Went to ENT and she cleaned my ear. My hearing came back 110% and she said my eardrum is fine. BUT the dizziness never went away. I suppose this was what induced my BPPV

I guess my question is, given my symptom is not a classic vertigo and plus a few other non classing ones (rocking , ground moving), has anyone has this with their BPPV?

I can still do activities just fine, but for exercise I can only walk. Anything that would sway my body would trigger the dizziness.

Saw an ENT 4 days ago, and he told me it's mild bppv. and print out exercises for me to do at home (Brandt daroff. )3 times a day for 2 weeks. IF they dont get better, The ENT will perform an epley.

I'm really hoping that this is BPPV and that I will get cured soon. I hate the ground-moving feeling 😦 they scare me so much. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated .

Thanks!!

wow i came on here to try and find answers and the first post i read is a total match to everything i am experiencing!! I too have this, its like a bobbing up and down motion or like the feeling when an elevator stops!! When i am washing the dishes i too feel like i am bouncing all over the place. My GPs are useless and tell me its anxiety but my anxiety is a result of this and not the other way round. I have had MRIs and CT scan, no end of blood tests and everything always comes back normal. I am due to see an ENT specialist in january. This has completely taken over my life and I dont leave my house. Its caused me huge panic attacks and makes me constantly worry I am dying! My ears ache all the time and i get aches and pains in my face and jaw. I have a fatigue i have never experienced before also and I cant do tasks the way I used to. This is crazy and I hope we can both get to the bottom of it 😦

Hi! this is indeed frustrating. you mentioned your ear aches. Could it be a viral infection? labyrinthitis or vestibular neuritis comes to mind.

how long have you had this? was there a trigger?

I'm starting to think it is anxiety. coz mine is gone when I see my family. sometimes it is still there though.

I am an anxious person so I'm not sure if that is what caused this.

      hey

i have had this since january. my ears dont always hurt thats a recent thing but they do always feel full. I honestly dont remember any trigger i just started to notice an off balance feeling and it went from there. i totally get the anxiety side of things and i am also an anxious person however this motion i feel is triggered by movement so that makes me think its something physically triggering it.

can i ask if you feel it when you clap your hands? how long has it been for you? do you feel generally unwell?

Also do you have any issues with your jaw and do you clench your teeth?

      Hello.

i dont feel it when i clap my hands but when i stand one legged or march in place i do. it has been since july for me. i feel generally well except nausea sometimes.

i do have tmj and my jaw feels tight as well.

I went to the ENT again yesterday and he performed epley maneuver. i felt better whole day yesterday but today I feel iffy again. but better after I took a walk.

have anyone diagnosed you with Bppv? it's pretty easy to cure. if you can find any vestibular therapist they can test it for you.

hope we can get cured soon.

      hey

No i havent had any diagnosis at all i am waiting to see the ENT doctor and because of covid its taking a while. My appointment is 15th January. Have you read up on TMJ because I have this also and it can cause this type of dizziness because it puts pressure on the inner ear. It is by far the most bizarre feeling i have ever felt and sometimes I feel like i am in a dream state. I also suffer from acid reflux and i was told sometimes the acid can reach your inner ears and cause vertigo. I just want to know what it is so I can work towards heeling, its so frustrating and worrying not knowing.

      Hi Elisha12885.

Did you find the answer? Are you feeling better?

You need to see a vestibular therapist.

hello thank you so much for your reply. I went to a vestibular clinic for tests which all came back fine. The lady said she thinks I have PPPD thats secondary to my PTSD? I just dont understand how it can all be fine when I feel this swaying motion constantly and i have so many other symptoms like extreme fatigue and brain fog. This has been happening for a year now 😦 do you know much about PPPD?

I'm feeling the same thing for the last 9 days. In the past I have been diagnosed with BPPV and I experience lightheadedness and wobbliness when doing things like laying flat on the ground. Well, last Friday I woke up with vertigo. Out of nowhere I had three moments of spinning for about ten seconds which seemed like an eternity. Since then I have had residual dizziness. I did the eply maneuver on my right side one day and then my left side the next. It seemed to rid me of the vertigo episodes.

In a nutshell, I guess I can explain it like my head is on a sailboat and my body is on it's own sailboat. And then of course anxiety sets in and it doesn't help.

I know what I'm feeling could be worse. Because it's not like I'm falling over or bouncing into things. I can walk around and do the laundry and take a shower, etc, but I do tire quickly. I certainly won't drive. My eyes and head are in this constant state of fog.

While I can't see the doctor or vestibular therapist until next week, I turned to cocculus indicus and feel as though it's helped a little bit. Ativan also helps calm my nerves so it helps mellow the bobbing sensation.

It's funny, as I type this I feel worse and worse. Today was my best morning yet, but as I sit here and read and type, I feel the sensation start to worsen. Is it anxiety? I just ate some mixed nuts and I want to blame the damn salt. Ugh. It's a never ending battle. I hope I can find answers soon as well.

Good luck and keep this thread informed.

How are you feeling now? Epley and Brandt-Daroff are a good cure for spinning vertigo (moving those crystals in your ears to the right place.) Only do those if you experience vertigo when lying your head back in position one. If you don't experience spinning, you don't need those exercises. If you do experience spinning then figure out which side is spinning and only treat that side.

With the constant motion like your head is on a boat, you are experiencing a disconnect with your ocular and vestibular systems. They were thrown out of wack when the vertigo came on. So your brain has to be retrained with different exercises. You need to see a vestibular therapist if you are still feeling symptoms. I finally saw one yesterday and I finally have some answers and am feeling much better.

    Good luck.

Hi @lm80 sorry for the late reply,

I actually saw a Vestibular Therapist and another ENT and started doing some vestibular exercise myself, and also accupunture. It got a lot better (5% left) in January, and I started to slack of on the exercise (I know..) and it has come back since, although mild.

I might have PPPD due to BPPV. I am active (play tennis, run, golf, do aerobic exercise) and when i'm doing them I am fine.

I realize when my dyspepsia is acting out, The motion came back worse.

in short, i am better, but it's still there on and off. Sometimes i can lay flat fine, but sometimes i will feel the wobblyness again. swaying motion and watching tv is still quite annoying. phones are fine , weirdly.

      how are you? @ @lm80 @elisha12885

    Drink more fluids.

that helps with PPPD? I'm trying to drink more and try to be more healthy in general.

symptoms are still there. what's bothering me the most is that I can't read or look at the computer.

motion sensitivity has gone down quite a bit. But focusing on the computers and reading is very tiring to me. I'll get headache/ pressure in the back of my head (left) and then i'll start swaying/ bobbing.

    Jonah:

if you look up BPPV, which i also have occasionally, I learned that some physical therapists are trained to manipulate your head through a canalith repositioning procedure. I found a reference to this at the Mayoclinic.org web site, or just do a Google search for BPPV realignment procedure.

Although I have had this problem several times, and know a physiotherapist trained to perform the maneuver, I never had the procedure and can't report on its effectivity. Nevertheless i would keep the name of such a therapist handy.
