Brace for weight bearing

Posted , 5 users are following.

I had a trimalleolar fracture on the 17th of May and surgery on the 24th. After a splint, cast, and boot (all NWB) I was given an ankle brace to wear while starting to weight bear and walk again. Has anyone else had a brace? Did you only wear tennis shoes with it? Or does flipflops or sandals work?

Id wear tie up shoes. Nothing that will flop around and trip you up. Best of luck.

Did you have that may of this year? Because I broke my ankle June 23rd and they still have me NWB how does it feel to walk again out of curiosity? I have an apt on the 15th to see how the fibula bones in healing with the plates and screws I’m hoping for positive news that I can attleast start partial weight baring or something sorry I’m asking so many questions it’s just the first time I’ve ever had a broken ankle and it gives me some hope that I might be able to walk again sooner or later! ☺️

Yes May of this year. I was 10 weeks post op before he cleared me for walking. Feels nice to walk but does feel weird and your foot gets sore very fast.

Oh wow that’s awesome.... because at work I’m on my feet for 8-9 hours at a time working in a pharmacy so I kinda expected the foot to be sore and swelling is what I’m thinking.... does it still hurt at all tho cuz I’m about 5-6 weeks now and I have very minimal pain where the sutures were taking out and I think it’s where the airboot rubs and minimal pain in the back of my ankle!

I’m having lots of soreness and I’d say pain level is at about a 4 but I haven’t had to take any medication for it

My surgeon put me a McDavid brace when I could start weight bearing. The brace is somewhat bulky but the only think I could wear with it on was sneakers. I love flip flops but haven't dared to wear them yet and I am 26 weeks post survery! You are going to want to stick with shoes that have more support because the last thing you want to do is roll your ankle and cause more damage.

That’s what I heard a lot of people say about redamaging there abkle I’m gonna be so scared when it comes time to start walking again I’m gonna look at the ground when I start lol proally always now! Did the brace help a lot better with swelling and pain?

I still have quite a bit of swelling but I also had ligament damage as well, but the brace does give me a lot of stability which makes me feel more confident

Idk if I had ligament damage they didn’t say anything about that all I know is my fibula just popped outta my skin if I would have hit the ground less harder it probably wouldn’t have popped out they said!!! But I’m going to have to look into a brace when I start walking again! How much weeks until u were walking again if you don’t mind me asking?

I started weight bearing with two crutches as tolerated on March 28th (My surgery was January 31st) and after a month I was down to walking with one crutch and I beleive May 21st I was walking with no crutches, just the ankle brace.Unfortunately it is a frustratingly slow process. My PT told me more then once that the ankle is the worst joint in the body to have to rehab.
