Breath smells like faeces (Poo)

Posted , 379 users are following.

I have this horrid poo smell from my mouth. I brush my teeth twice a day, floss, use Dentyl PH mouthwash, I have the best oral hygeine of anyone I know but I still have this smell. I am too embarrassed to even ask my flriends or family to tell me my breath stinks. I am becoming totally reclusive because of it. Id rather go to my GP and tell him ive got an STD. I know ive got it coz sometimes people look around and ask if ive farted, and I see people with babies smelling their nappies when I speak. It really is starting to badly affect my life but I just cant pluck up the courage ot go to my GP. How on earht can i ay \"DR, My breath smells like poo!\" Please, if anyone has any tips let me know.

....mj88283 just to be clear, the Gastroanterologist finds no relationship between BB and his field of expertise 'in my case'!

Brandon, one GI tested me for silent reflux bc he smelled it during the summer & said it smelled like sulfur. I don't have any acid & told me to stop omeprizole. My current GI said the odor can be from back up. I go in the morning but its not a complete bowel movement bc I have to go several times but small amounts during the day. Also look to see if a doc agrees if u have a sinus issue that may be causing this.

Hello Brandon, my GI said the same. I have a hiatus hernia & took different GI meds. I saw a Rhinologist but he didn't smell anything. I told him how ppl react when I breath out. Co-workers/ friends have told me what I breath out smells like. He prescribed omerprizole bc he does think the odor can be from my hernia or stomach. I'm following up w specialist this Friday. I will update

I'm beginning to think it's simple, yet complicated at the same time. I don't believe the smell comes from the gut, only in rare cases and the majority of cases it's actually bad bacteria from the mouth. Thing is how do we get rid of these bad bacteria? I'm not saying the gut may not play some role, but I think bad bacteria from the mouth may be a symptom of something from the gut. All I know is I never use to have bad breath, which is strange. I remember being younger in my teens and was always self conscious of my breath for no reason at all. I never got comments and always had friends and girlfriends. It wasn't till recent years I started getting comments and notice my persistent white tongue that won't go away. His was also during the time of life changing events that caused chronic emotional stress and anxiety. I asked some of my ex girlfriends if they ever notice bad breath on me and they told me no and I was with these girls in long term relationships. In my life there are too many variables to determine the cause..was it psychologically induced? Stress related? Maybe my silver fillings causing damage to my liver and gut? Appendix removal(good bacteria reserve)? Bad diet(if that's the case 90% of Americans should have bad breath)? Combination of them all?!!!

I agree Daniel. My husband can eat a bar of chocolate then fall asleep, wake up in the morning without bb. Whereas I avoid dairy chocolate, brush, floss, scrape, rinse with hydrogen peroxide to the point where my lips are burnt and my breath smells like sh**.

I have memories of being 11 years old and people telling me my breath smells. Granted at that age I used to pretend I had brushed my teeth by wetting my toothbrush so my parents thought I had! I don't think this has any relevance now tho as I have the best dental hygiene and diet out of everybody I know.

My sister has this condition too but she doesn't care and doesn't do all the things I do. Ironically hers doesn't seem as bad as mine which makes me think all my cleaning is actually killing off any good bacteria in my mouth. Rinsing with disinfectant will do that!!

There must be a cure out there! It just needs somebody to care enough to develop it. There must be millions of people who have this surely?

I've had this condition for years, just got some hydrogen peroxide to use as mouthwash and to gargle with. Does every one with bb always have white tongue ?

      Hi Ian

I don't have a white tongue. It maybe goes a bit white at the back if I don't scrape but I scrape morning and night and to be honest there doesn't ever seem like there is much to scrape.

Some people on the forum have a white tongue all the time. Often it is linked to thrush. Have you tried to treat that before?

    • Posted

Yes I've been treated for that but nothing works, this peroxide seems to help a bit though.

I have the 6% peroxide but it burnt the inside of my lips. Think I should be diluting it more.

I'm pretty sure my white tongue is the culprit. And you have to remember his could go to the very back parts of your tongue and throat that you really can't reach. I've used tongue scrapers, but they've all been plastic and ice come to realize they just irritate those bumps at the back of my tongue and now they are swollen to the point where u can no longer use a tongue scraper for the back of my tongue because it's too painful. I called every store here to find a metal one because those don't tear up your tongue, but to my surprise no one even carries them, so I ordered one a week ago, can't wait to get it in! I know it won't solve my bb, but it won't also make things worse!

Oh mines is a tongue brush but is needing replaced. I'll need to source a metal one too.

Lucky for you Loobs you have a husband smile

I am too ashamed to even go on a date coz I knew it won't go well. I could've been a perfect 10 if it wasn't for my BB sad

      Just soo soo sad...

I didn't realize how crappy my plastic tongue scraper was until I tried using a spoon to scrape my tongue and the metal just glided so much easier without all that friction that ultimately tore some of my papallie off my tongue..lol I then realized metal scrapers would be the way to go. Also I noticed since it did irritate some of the papallie's at the far back of my tongue that I couldn't even scrape back there anymore because it was too painful so I left it alone and I guess my breath got a little worse because of the build up in the back that wasn't being scraped and now you could smell my bb through my nose. Thing is the nose and mouth are connected and the smells from the back of tongue and throat will also come out through the nose. This was the first time I've had someone say anything about bb from my nose breathing.. I saw this as a good sign because it narrowed things down for me. So, this definitely made my decision on getting a better tongue scraper.

Hi Mj. I'm lucky to have found a man with a poor sense of smell. Still, this condition affects me, I'm always paranoid kissing him. I feel bad for him.

I have done everything. I have acid reflux but it is stable now with the use of some anti acid medications but the the smell is still there. Last week I talked to my GI about my breath and he told me that is caused by something called #globus# I do have a feeling of something stuck in the middle of my throat and I can smell it. Those feelings happens as soon as I eat a meal. My Doctor said I need to do something to relax as those feelings happen mostly when I am stressed out. I am doing yoga and walking for 30 minutes every day and helps to relax but I can still smell my breath. I am lucky though because I have a partner (boyfriend ) who knows I have this problem but he accepts me for who I am. I keep telling him about all the efforts I have put to find the cure and he is been very supportive. I do feel down sometimes when he tells me that my breath stinks but I will keep looking for a cure and I hope that one day I will be blessed .

the only way to be free of stress while the difficulties of life are still present is by changing your way of thinking, your prospective on life. I was chronically emotionally stressed for years because of some financial and custody type circumstances and that's really when I started to notice a change in me. I did relieve myself of that stress by listening to this Buddhist talk on YouTube. His name is Adjahm Brahm. I so happened to listen to one of his talks that spoke to me and I swear the next day I felt like I was high because all my stress, anger, hopelessness, anxiety and worry that I had been holding onto for years just vanished. If it wasn't his video and that exact topic he talked about I probably never would of let go of my sufferings that I was causing myself. Since then I've pretty much watched all his talks and now interested in Buddhism. I did get back into meditation, not because of that event, I had some exposure to it in the past but it never made sense and helped me like it has now. I don't recommend meditation until you know what it is or isn't you are trying(or should I say not trying to achieve) becomes clear to you. You should check out his videos on YouTube and I'm sure you'll find one that is relevant to your situation, but they are all relevant to everyone when it comes to everyday difficulties in life. I can recommend a few that I remember being good.

      Hello,

I know exactly how you feel. Having the beauty, brains , and the awesome personality is nothing when you have bad breath . So I been working extermly had to find the cause of it. I ask that before you continue reading that you take in to account that I am pain killers right now so I a scattered brained .

As of seven years ago I started to have this severely bad breath and I couldn't find the source. I went from dentist to no Avail because I had " great oral hygiene ". I started purchase all sorts of vitamins different kinds of tooth brushes and toothpaste all promising to be the cure to bad breath, nothing helped .The worst products of all come from that therabreath I wasted so much money on their probiotic systems. I

saw a dentist on good morning America who claimed to have the soulution , he charged me two thousand dollars for a cleaning system that didn't work at all, and unfortunately it was non refundable .

I later watched a video on you tube about tonsil stones and I could recall a few earlier that I coughed up a little white stone that smelted horrible . I was ignorant to the subject of tonsil stones at the time so I just flushed it brushed and never thought about it again . I found an ENT to look at my tonsils and I was told that at my age ,30, I should just keep them in and learn how to deal with the systoms ,I was made to believe that my battle with bad breath is not as important as other old medical contains . What these doctors fail to realize is that bad breath can go as far as leading down the road of depression and isolation . I went thru the ENTs before I found someone who understood my situation , this man was extermly sensitive to my condition and aster ecplaining everything he was willing to remove my tonsils . I had the surgery yesterday : it painful swallowing and I have to eat liquids for the next week and soft foods next week and I have to take these really strong pain pills . I was able to read the doctors findings this morning and he found "over ten cryptic tonsils ". I reached cryptic tonsils and one of the systoms is serve bad breath . I'll have to wait until I fully recover to see how beneficial the surgery was . I'll keep posting my progress. Please forgive my grammatical errors as I am typing under the influence .

Did you ever notice the stones prior to the removal of your tonsils? I know you said you coughed one up, but did you ever examine your tonsils to see if you could see any?

Please do so because as I recall one person on the forum had her tonsil removed and made no difference. I'm hoping this will work for you! Pls keep me posted with the result and I will consider removing my tonsils as well. I just bumped my health insurance coverage to the highest level so this shouldn't cost me much!
