Breath smells like faeces (Poo)

Posted , 379 users are following.

I have this horrid poo smell from my mouth. I brush my teeth twice a day, floss, use Dentyl PH mouthwash, I have the best oral hygeine of anyone I know but I still have this smell. I am too embarrassed to even ask my flriends or family to tell me my breath stinks. I am becoming totally reclusive because of it. Id rather go to my GP and tell him ive got an STD. I know ive got it coz sometimes people look around and ask if ive farted, and I see people with babies smelling their nappies when I speak. It really is starting to badly affect my life but I just cant pluck up the courage ot go to my GP. How on earht can i ay \"DR, My breath smells like poo!\" Please, if anyone has any tips let me know.

Bad breath is a pain and completely crippling. A few things to help you narrow down causes:

    1. Do you have your tonsils? If yes stick your finger back and touch you tonsil. Smell it, is it the same "poo" smell? If yes then you problem is pretty common.

    - gargle with hydrogen peroxide making sure to get it to your tonsils. It will loosen tonsillitis and can prevent new ones. If you can see white stuff in your tonsils that is a likely a tonsilith. Push around it with your toothbrush or finger if you can handle it. If it pops out then good. If it won't move then do the gargle for several days and try again. Still won't move? Go to ENT and they will get it out.

    - the enemy of a person fighting bad breath is adry mouth. Dry mouths makes breath worse. Everyone's tongue and mouth will smell when it's dry. Drink a ton of water. Do not use mouthwash with alcohol in it. Alcohol dehydrates mucus membranes in your mouth. Check of any medications cause dry mouth. If so you know why it's dry but don't stop the med unless you talk to dr. Try using a mouthwash that moisturizes mucus membranes like biotene. Avoid diet soda because it has salt which dries your mouth and caffeine which can dry.  Dry mouth can cause tooth decay too. People that breathe through their mouth at night often wake up with terrible breath because their mouth is completely dry. Also try adding lemon to water or sucking on lemon drops. Sour will make your saliva glands squeeze down and produce more saliva. Also no fake sugar. It dries mouth. Sugar free gum can exacerbate bad breath. But there is a new gum that actually helps with saliva and bacteria in the mouth. The sugar in the gum is xylitol. Otherwise fake sugar should be avoided.

    - try green tea. It has been found to help bad breath by calming stomach and safely killing/fighting bad breath germs. The caffeine in green tea is not a problem because of the stuff in it that helps your breath. Just one of those weird situations that a good part overrides the usually bad ingredient.

    2. If the smell isn't actually present in your mouth but coming up from your stomach then here's some stuff you can try:

    - probiotic to control the bad bacteria and encourage good bacteria, start eating a yogurt daily

    - always go to bed with an empty stomach. Digestion produces acid and laying down let's it flow into your esophagus. If you feel a lump in your throat you might have the acid issue. If you have heartburn you likely have the acid erosion. Try swishing your mouth with gaviscon then swallowing before bed. It will coat your stomach and keep acid in your stomach.

    - drink water to help water down the acid in your stomach

-try propping the head of your bed up on bricks, the slight incline will help keep acid down. Don't just prop your head with a pillow because it will make your torso bend a little which can cause the acid to migrate. You want to be flat but your head (mouth) should be higher than your neck which should be higher than your stomach, no bends.

    - try eating only bland foods for a few days to keep acid down and see if breath improves. You could try nexium too for acid.

    3. Do you have post nasal drip or extra mucus?

    - try a netti pot or nelimed sinus irrigation. Try with the saline and you could try a little but of baby shampoo. It's gentle enough for sinuses but the soapy part will break through biofilm in sinuses and make the saline work better/actually get to the mucus membranes.

    - try an OTC steroid nasal spray after the irrigation.

    - use a hypertonic saline rinse that comes in a can and sprays into your nose. I use one every night and it helps keep my congestion down (saline shrinks membranes and moisturizes) and I like to rinse out any environmental allergens I might have breathed in and are hanging out in my sinuses waiting to be cleaned about by mucus. I have mold allergy and decaying leaves outside cause mold and I inevitably breathe it in. I feel better the next morning not sleeping with it in my sinuses for several hours.

    4. The last area it have heard about but it isn't my expertise - do you have body odor? Like bad enough that someone has commented? Not like the sweaty smell under your pits but like your body smells. Like some people will say if they eat onions that their body seems to excrete a strange smell for several days. Like smelling their forearm smells weird. If you have noticed a personal body smell you might just have some sensitivities. You could keep track of what you eat and when you smell the odor and look for a correlation. Eliminate the food and see if it helps. Again drink a bunch of water and make sure your pee comes out clear. People digest some foods better than other foods and maybe you are eating something that your body just doesn't like. Not exactly an allergy but a sensitivity that is trying to alert you that there is a better food choice for you.

I am not familiar with parasites and other causes people have mentioned. I hope one or all of these things help you. I had a close friend tell me my breath smelled like a fart and I'm the type tag appreciates the honesty. I immediately noticed my mouth felt so dry. Then I found out my migraine preventative causes dry mouth. I started massive amounts of water (at least 3 liters a day) and I use biotene and I've been asked if I have ever had bad breath before! Little do they know I used to have fart breath. Good luck!

I think you must use your mouth freshner frequently, may be like twice in an hour.

No disrespect intended here Mia but if a mouth freshener worked I doubt this thread would even exist.

We are all on this forum because we have tried everything!! And I mean everything. You will probably find that most people on this forum have used every toothpaste, mouthwash, breath freshener on the market that promises fresh breath. These things might work for people who just need a quick freshen up. We have a serious bad breath condition that isn't normal and that so far I haven't found a cure for.

It's frustrating for me when I read suggestions such as use breath freshener.

      Loobs

Not to beat up on Mia but it is insulting to suggest something so silly. It has taken me 5 years to figure out what my problem was and the cause. As I have said in the past during this discussion, more often than not the problem is sinuses or stomach issues not dental hygiene. It is a serious problem that can really get you down that cannot be resolved with a little toothpaste or mouthwash. Even more frustrating is trying to get the medical community to take you seriously. Now they're useless!!!

So have you cured your breath problem now? I have a post nasal drip but it's nothing major so don't think it could be that. It's been worse lately as I have been drinking milk kefir every day hoping to cure my bb. Think I may have an allergy to milk as I have more mucus than ever.

That's because milk is mucus Loobs rolleyes...that's why you have more than ever now. Think back to whenever you've endulged in ice cream or a heavy cheese-laden food, that the very next day you feel congested with phlegm in the sinuses and throat.

I happened upon this knowledge by chance (because who researches milk?? everyone knows what milk is right?). My aunt found an article and passed it around to the family for shock value (she's always finding weird bit of info)...and when I read it I was surprised! Prior to this I used to think I had an eternal cold (a la post nasal drip).

Now consider how cheese is made; the entire process (including it's stinky results). We provide the perfect environment to repeat this process, in our throats.

Having to use a mouth freshner every two hours would be impractical and clearly not get to the root cause of the problem. Isn't it crystal clear that those of us who has had this problem have excellent oral hygiene? Using breath freshener every half hour, hour etc will not solve the problem.

Im in the same boat.. ive been to countless dentists, ive been to my gp and all they say is try a different mouthwash etc... how is there not more help out there for people with this??

Notice what their reply always is..."try a different mouthwash"; freshener or gum. There's not more help out there because it's assumed that this bad breath is a hygine issue; that we're lazy in our oral upkeep...when in reality we're probably the most obsessive about our oral care compared to "normal" people lol.

What's worse is when those you ask for help won't help because of THEIR OWN embarrassment of having to admit that *you* have bad breath, which boggles my mind! I need help! *You're* embarassed to admit *I* have a problem...one I've already acknowledged having o_0??

That's why I quickly realized I was on my own with finding a solution, if my own family refuse to be there for me.

Over 10 years into this lonely journey and I've narrowed it down to milk & cheese (i.e. dairy) as the source of my problem...but milk is the chief incredient in many of the world foods so it's hard to completely avoid.

I do not drink milk or cream as i am lactose intolerant. mine was from my stomach acid until i treated the bacteria which causes ulcers. now it is from my sinuses as i have an extremely deviated septum and the mucus does not drain as it should. when i force it, it drains into my mouth and it tastes like crap. i am seeing a surgeon to fix my nose in the new year. in the meantome i use a natural spray which loosens the mucus and helps it drain so it doesn't turn into bacteria. this is why i say it's important to know what is causing the smell and taste because it usually had little tl do with your dental hygiene.

Have you ever considered investing in a nasal/sinus & throat irrigation machine? I read that the cillia can get lazy and need help to get back into rhythm. For those who don't know, cillia are the micro hairs in the nasal/sinus passages that are supposed to "sweep" back and forth to create a motion/current that carries particles and mucus out of the passage.

I'm not sure how/why the function stops (maybe it's due to constantly sniffin instead of blowing one's nose, but don't quote me on it), but some irrigation machines restore the cillia to proper function while also helping with mucus drainage.

I've never heard of them.Because my septum is so deviated and the opening is much larger on one side the mucus dries and sticks and that is why is doesn't drain. It becomes difficult to dislodge it from the cartilage. The opening is so small on the other side that mucus actually becomes trapped there and is hard to move because it dries there overnight, in fact the side with the small opening gets very cold and painful because the air doesn't get through when I breathe. After all these years I am convinced the only option I have left is surgery to fix the septum.

Ah, I see. I've seen videos where mucus can appear almost as thick as rubber if allowed to accumilate for a long while, so I imagine that's a horrendous experience for you.

Well I hope for all the best with your surgery.

Thanks. I clear my sinuses with a natural spray made with purified water, xylitol and grapefruit seed extract I get from the States. It works better than anything I have ever bought at a pharmacy or by prescription. No rebound effect as it contains no salt.

It sounds like built up sinus mucous and associated bacteria - no matter what you do for your breath, it won't help?  We've found excellent results by regularly using the nettie pot with saline packets. You can also buy a booster liquid to add to the saline solution that thins thickened sinus mucous. Start out slowly and once you're comfortable using it - experiment to figure out whether you need to use the nettie pot daily, every other day, every three days... and so on. Ask a trusted friend to alert you as soon as the smell begins to resurface. Using the nettie pot the day before that tends to happen keeps the sinuses clear and the odor at bay.  For those with sinus-induced bad breath, a nettie pot coupled with regular dental hygeine can change your life.
