I have this horrid poo smell from my mouth. I brush my teeth twice a day, floss, use Dentyl PH mouthwash, I have the best oral hygeine of anyone I know but I still have this smell. I am too embarrassed to even ask my flriends or family to tell me my breath stinks. I am becoming totally reclusive because of it. Id rather go to my GP and tell him ive got an STD. I know ive got it coz sometimes people look around and ask if ive farted, and I see people with babies smelling their nappies when I speak. It really is starting to badly affect my life but I just cant pluck up the courage ot go to my GP. How on earht can i ay \"DR, My breath smells like poo!\" Please, if anyone has any tips let me know.

Mine is more obvious when my throat is dry. But i noticed that when i eat more often throughout the day i dont get that smell. I drink hot water with lemon and it helps if i can remember though. Im avoiding caffeine now since thats causes to dry my throat more or it dehydrates me fast. The key is keeping our throat wet. And i just started taking probiotics to to correct my gut problems.

If you have a gut problem, probiotics will not be useful without a strict diet plan..it's like eating mcdonalds everyday with a Diet Coke and thinking your are going to loose weight.

Has anyone had their appendix removed? I only ask because it's now know that the appendix was a reserve of good gut bacteria.

Gargling and rinsing with peroxide may help. You should probably see a dentist. A few years ago I had a bad "taste" in my mouth no matter how often I brushed my teeth. Which in turn made me brush more often and more vigorously. I finally went to a dentist and found out I was actually worsening the problem because I was irritating my gums with all the brushing. My gums were inflamed and started to "harbor" the bacteria causing the bad taste. I had my teeth cleaned, started using a soft bristled tooth brush and flossing almost every day. I use a mouth wash with peroxide a few times a week.

Hello, I know this is a somewhat older thread but I have some really important things that might help if any of you are still suffering. After having this horrid breath for 30 years, nearly my whole life, I now have normal breath and even wake up with decently smelling breath! Its a miracle!

    1) First of all I found out that I have "silent GERD" which is acid reflux which you cannot feel. My dentist noticed that my teeth were losing enamel and came to that conclusion. I started taking 20 mg omeprazole daily and my bad breath decreased by at least half.

    2) I bought an extra awesome tongue scraper- this old school style, big metal one that has 2 handles on the side and a thick metal band that curves and has a raised area in the center to really get into your tongue. The brand is called Dr. TUNG'S. Dont just scrape it- stick your tongue out as far as you can and put the metal looped part partially down your throat to get the back of your tongue- the back of it that you cannot even see. Use firm pressure and scrape it at least 5 to 10 times. When you think you are done, smell the last scraping after a minute and see if it still smells. If it does, keep going! Your tongue may even bleed a little but you gotta do what you gotta do! Use a toothbrush for the insides of your cheeks and lips. Scrub all of that film off of your mouth wheather you see it or not. Floss the heck out of your teeth- not just between them- takr the floss and pull it to the side to get near the root of each tooth. Wiggle the floss while tugging it firmly against your tooth. Dont forget the very back ones or even tweth with spaces. They will all have tartar or plaque at least up higher by the roots. This took care of a big portion of the leftover bad smell.

    4) I have a bit of a post nasal drip so I bwgan taking cheap OTC claritin (loratidine 10 mg) on a daily basis. On extra bad days, I take Claritin D which has pseudophedrine in it.

    5) I drink a ton of water and water with lemon, (and guilty pleasure- regular Cocacola) and make sure I dont get a dry mouth. I notice that diet soda and juice's artificial sweetener gives me bad breath. I avoid other sugary things like those mint "breath mints" that actually seem to GIVE me bad breath. Eat as much fresh produce as possible. Avoid processed crap. If you eat or drink dairy, try and cleanse your mouth by eating a fiberous and neutral snack like an apple or carrot sticks, or at the very least, a big glass of water.. maybe chew on fresh mint leaves too? They do work well. It has to be the real thing and not a breath mint though.

6)Don't ask me how I figured it out, but one day I coughed and a little white chunk came flying out of my throat. I had a sore throat for a week or so beforehand but nothing serious. I thought I had coughed up a piece of my tooth because thats what it looked like. To my horror, when I pressed it between my fingers, it emitted the most foul, dog poop-like smell that I have ever smelled in someones mouth. Of course I checked out good ol youtube and discovered that I am a victim of these horrible TONSIL STONES!!! And it does take much to make your mouth smell like a pile of dog poo. Visions of these pungent morsels going into poor hubby's mouth when I kiss him made me feel like the filthiest human alive. So I spent the next hour or so gargling with warm/hot salt water, and warm olive oil to try and get any more little buggers to work their way out of the crypts in my tonsils. Nothing came out after an hour of trying this. So I resorted to qtips. After carefully analyzing methods of removal on youtube, it seemed the best way was to press at the area of skin right in front of the tonsil, which would open that crevice up and release any calcified chunks of bacteria and plaque. I held a LED mag lite in one hand, qtip on the other. I was able to see a couple tiny suspicious spots when I pressed around but nothing came out. Next I took a plastic irrigator type syringe used for giving babies medicine. Again I gargled with warm water, salt and then olive oil. Then I filled the syringe with very warm water, put the plastic tip right into the crevice of skin right in front of the tonsil, and blasted the water into that crevice with all of my might. To my amazement and relief, about 6 little stones came gushing out and into the sink (I did plug the drain so i could analyze anything that came out). The stones all looked like shiny chips of broken teeth and again, when I smashed them, they confirmed they were tonsil stones by the pungent, worse than dog poop odor! I did this on the other side repeatedly, and nothing came out. Well its been a few weeks and tonight I decided to take another look-sie. I have had a little sore throat and my right tonsil was a little red and felt like something could be stuck there. This time, I shined my trusty mag lite onto my inflammed tonsil and just used my index finger to prod around a bit, gave my tonsil a little push from the skin in front of the tonsils, and to my shock and also horror, a VERY large tonsil stone went flying out, and the harder I pushed, the more that came out! The first chunk was as big as one of my molars! It looked like my tonsil birthed a tooth! It was so nasty and smelled worse than anything you could possibly imagine. Then the other pieces that came out were also equally as smelly but they were different shapes, perfectly molded into the shapes of my tonsular crypts. Once I emptied my tonsils out, I felt an instant relief and they felt so good, pain free and refreshed. I took my water pik and gave both tonsular crypts (the little holes everyones tonsils have) a good blast to make sure no lingering little stones got left behind. There were 2 very tiny stones that ended up coming out with the water pik. I then gargled again with warm salt water, brushed my teeth, scraped my tongue and all of that once again. Gargled with and held a mouth full of hydrogen peroxide in my mouth for about 1 fill minute. And now I feel SO GOOD!

Anyways I hope my tips might help someone who reads this. I know how embarassing it can be. When I was nervous, my reflux got worse and made my breath worse. I had been on 2 dates back 10+ years ago before I met my hubby and those guys said something about my breath one time each. It felt so helplesw because I did not know why or how to fix it. Go watch tonsil stone removals on youtube to get the hang of this. Keep in mind those are usually extra bad cases of it but you very possibly have a little of that. Best wishes and feel free to ask me questions. I now feel confident and have normal smelling breath almost all the time. It has changed my life for the better wink

That's really helpful tliz thank you.  Particulary about the warm water you use to flush out your tonsils.  I am trying to cut back on dairy which I know makes my tonsil stones worse, also sugar too.

The thing I don't agree with is this Tung brush.  Brushes don't get rid of the bacteria and coating, they simply move it around. I tried another tongue brush on the market and it made no difference.  Also, don't press too hard, your tongue bleeding is not a good thing.  If you use a tongue scraper gently it will remove all the coating and bacteria but won't make your tongue bleed.  Don't use a tongue scraper that has teeth either as these will cause more crevices in the tongue which then trap bacteria!  Use a tongue scaper with a nice flat edge.

Do you use a mouthwash at all?  I use Profresh which is sold in the USA and the UK but am finding paying out for mouth wash all the time gets expensive.  If flushing my tonsils out works, along with the tongue scraping and dairy and sugar elimination, these pesky tonsil stones should disappear!

I hear ya on the Dr Tung scraper. Its not a brush though. Its hard to explain. The center of the metal loop is raised so it does do a good job of scraping off the nasty layer. I have also used a big metal tablespoon in the past with similar results. As for dairy, I dont think its that much of a problem as long as you then consume something hydrating and refreshing, sort of dilute it out with a fruit or mild veggie like carrots and celery.. or drink lots of water afterwards. Its more of an issue when that thick mucus sits in your mouth from dairy. But I really think youll love the syringe/ water pic once you figure out what angle works for you and how to soften them up. The oil gargle definitely lubricates them so they blast out of their easier. Also theres a plastic syringe that has a longer injector portion that tapers off thin, and curves to the side a little. You may have to find it online but I swear its worth every penny. The water pik can be painful sometimes so be careful and start off slow on it. And definitely use peroxide after to kill the bacteria you disturb when doing this. I wish you luck! You will get it under control. I am to the point where I could brush my teeth 1X a day and I would not have any major issue :D

Ok. Will have a look at this Tung product then. I assumed it was just a brush.

I have one of those curved syringes so will try using that. The dairy is a big issue for me. It makes my nose gloom up too therefore increasing my post nasal drip and making my tongue worse. Even if I brush my teeth after my breath honks for a good few hours after.

I will be spending some time in the bathroom this evening! Thanks for the tips.

Hi tliz, have u noticed if you had ear aches?
    • Posted

Yes I do, and swollen lymph nodes in my throat, neck and ear area. Some things make it worse. Its cold here so we have the furnace cranked up to 72 and the air is so dry even with a humidifier. My sinuses and skin are so dry. My mouth is dry. I woke up today with an earache and sore throat. I am also in tune to this tonsil stone issue now that I know how it feels. I had a slight feeling of gritty sand in my throat all day. A little while ago, i gargled with the warm olive oil and warm salt water for a good 20 mins. Then I took my curved tip syringe and blasted it into the crevices in my tonsils. And another 10 or so little stones came out! Once again they smell like straight up shi+! Dear god why is this even a thing that happens to us humans. It is foul and I disgust myself, probably a little ocd kicking in here now because rest assured, I will be blasting my tonsils free of any debris on a daily basis now. You do have to push around on them a bit to see them start to come up. Picture little rocks stuck in the holes of baby swiss cheese- little calcified rocks that have really latched themselves into those holes very firmly. So youve got to work on breaking the stone's bond/attachment to the tonsil skin with that oil and warm salt water. Keep your mouth as moistuized as possible too. And blast the heck out of them with that syringe or water pic every day. After figuring out my disgusting problem and smelling those stones, I can almost guarantee most of you have these.

    Hi everyone

In my opinion our problem needs either Scientific, Traditional or Religious research for healing. I'v suffered for 10 years and during the years iv 'Done it all' you name it! Spent hundreds of thousands in what has been said to be possible cures and also on research , from surgeries to prescriptions meds, OTC's to everything. Some of us don't have just bad breath but we have Halitosis. I'v just resigned from my job as civil engineer because I couldn't take it anymore- meetings, inspections etc, halitosis ruined me. I'll be getting money from the years iv served, I'll use most of it to continue the research, I'm not giving up till the day I die.

You are kidding with mentioning religious research? Scientific research sure but religion helping bad breath? Haha!Come on let's talk facts here please. People are on here looking for real help and advice, not Father Christmas.

Listen, listen.. I think you may have overreacted just a bit by quitting your job over this. Probably time to see a psychiatrist. In the meantime, follow my advice posted above and get back to work and life, Father Christmas 😂. Im ROTFLMAO over here 😂

      Hi Brandon,

I'm the same thing did everything. The new research me and this other lady is the bowel obstruction. She is going to see a dr to do a CT scan and possible have a surgery.

Will post if this cure the problem. Meanwhile please do share if you have found a solution.

      Thank you,

      MJ

You quit your job??? I honestly feel so bad if you guys let the opinions of others affect you this badly. I bet your worry about it makes you assume people are reacting to you when theyre likely often not. I went to school with a girl whose breath smelled the worst like the nastiest dog sh*t and even she was ok to be around when she didnt get right in your face with her big stinky mouth. A little distance helps.

I am sorry to hear that you felt the need to quit your job . I understand how this problem can take over your life however unless you have won the lotto or have unlimited supply of money you need a job . Try something you can do at home if you are to embassed to be in public . I too suffer with bad breath and I know how much it sucks to have ppl talk about you but everyone has something about theirselves they would like to change . I am trying the nasal aspirator to remove my stones hopefully that will help . All the best to you and please try to focus on your good qualities

Btw I reread my comment and I want to make clear I am not laughing at Brandon. The Father Christmas comment is what I am laughing about. It is a funny term and strikes me as funny
