Breathing problems and GERD

Posted , 10 users are following.

I recently started with a new doctor (seen her twice) and she said I have GERD, I have been through every lung test and many heart tests which all come back negative. This doctor is hearing what I am saying. We haven't done anything more than medications of Pred-20mg for 5 days, Mucinex and Omeprazole, which I had to stop because it seemed to make my breathing worse. Can someone please explain what there breathing feels like? Mine feels like I can't take a deep breath like there is something in the way and if I could just push it out of the way, I would be able to breathe. Some days it is almost good and then other days are not. Lung tests show nothing. Please help me understand if you have similar breathing issues.

Yes, no protein but it does have 40-45% calcium.  Pic was taken 6-7 years ago, I retired when I was 46 from the Air Force.  My cholesterol is 159 but at one time some years ago it was 240.   Yes, the pizza. ;-)   What is your opinion on EXTRA VIRGIN SIBERIAN PINE NUT OIL?  I have Gastritis with moderate inflamation which could be the reason for my problems, and I read this is pretty good for it.

You're right I forgot about the calcium content being decent, I will have to try it again now that I have a better reason to try it. I have never heard of Siberian pine nut oil, I looked it up, it lowers LDL but like EVOO it doesn't raise HDL. I will check it out further. You sound like you are into healthy eating, is this because of medical issues or just your way?  Over the years, I have gone from eating healthy for a while and then get hooked on sugar and eat a diet of ice cream and oreos.  But I had finally got a handle on things and have been exercising and eating very healthy, and then boom! So now I am kind of in limbo trying to figure out the next move, it won't come fast as I will have to get a more definitive diagnosis first. If you know any good foods that raise HDL and lower LDL please let me know.  You have done a great job on your cholesterol, what are your HDL and LDL levels?

I looked up gastritis also and simple explanation read inflamed stomach lining, and once again diet looks like a helpful decision. What else do they do for that if meds and diet don't work?

Air Force was a good choice, my dad was in the Air Force he was a radar mechanic.

Fish oil and coconut oil raise the HDL.

Also studies show that bread products raise LDL. I went off bread products for a while and LDL LOWERED. Use Carlson liquid fish oil, take one tablespoon daily, don't get enough in capsule and very often found to be bad.

I thought fish oil was bad to take for acid reflux so I quit taking it. Thanks papote was telling me about coconut oil also.

My HDL CHOLESTEROL is 65 and LDL-CHOLESTEROL 90. I was into staying in shape, keeping the muscles I had and Martial Arts before this all started. At 52 I was looking pretty good and then the Doc Misdiagnosed me with a heart attack just because I had mild chest pain and mild headaches. Back then they put me on 4 medications because I was borderline on BP, Cholesterol and had heartburn twice monthly.  Yes, heartburn which I dont have anymore. Plus I did have chronic sinus and they put me on antibiotics for 3 weeks, nasal spray plus claritin and the mix of all medications at the same time turned my body and mind around.  So I was more into looking good, not really eating healthy. Now, this got my mind going crazy when they told me I had COPD ( suspected, but did not have) so my anxiety took over.   It's funny, but I believe my problem is not what I eat, is the medication I take for anxiety which is also a muscle relaxer. I take a low dose, but I did not have this problem until I started to take anxiety medication.  I was a Weather Specialist half of my career and Security Forces Supervisor/Manager the other half which is why I took care of my body but not really my health.;-( But I not get sick until this happened 2 1/2 years ago.

Your HDL and LDL are in the right places, what are your triglycerides?

I tried the baking soda again this morning and I burped under two min. only. Then made a smoothie with pineapple juice, yogurt, flax, strawberries, banana and then felt a bit crappy. I haven't exercised for three days now and still have the lump in my throat so I guess that won't be going away.  Upper airway breathing is better, but overall breathing is worse, very tired which is always there but more so when I can't breathe right.

      How did your acupuncture go?

The smoothie sounds very good but not sure the pineapple is good for you.  Try apple.  So you have upper and lower airway problems  just like me?  Not good when you have both. :-(   Yes, when you have breathing problems the body is using more energy so is like adding 20 years to your health.  I'm doing a test today and I have seen changes, but it could be the placebo effect. Will give details if is real and not just me thinking it is.

Yes, had my first acupuncture yesterday. This included coping as well which I was not expecting.  My back looks like I been torture but it feels fine.   This Saturday is my next appointment and he will be introducing Chinese herbalism. Just hope it does not interact with my medications. ;-)

Fresh pineapple is a natural source of bromelain. Unless it is a particular trigger food for you, pineapple is a good choice.

I think you are both right. I am trying to figure out if it works with my system or not that is the answer.

I can't wait to hear what you are trying that may be giving you some relief. I WANT SOME!!!

I am finding out I have two breathing problems, one gets better when I exercise (slow walking I'm finding out) and the other is from the acid reflux and tight esophagus (feels like this anyway).

Are you black and blue from the cupping? What does it do for you, lesson pain?

It is, and I actually have both.  But pineple is a citric acid fruit which don't actually cause acid reflux, but the acid can make stomach contents more acidic, and therefore more irritating to your esophagus which is why I believe is the problem for most of us.

The back form the cupping It's more like dark red and it looks really bad.  Now, it was more like getting a message because it was not painful and I actually enjoyed it.  They told me it mobilizes blood flow which  promote healing and takes away the pain.  I was not expecting this on my first visit much less when I had very little knowledge on how this works or what it does for you. As for the acupuncture he inserted like 15-20 needles all around including my ears, but 2 of them I felt like it hit a nerve or something because it did give me a moderate discomfort /pain in the surrounding area. All others I felt nothing. ;-)  They make you sign a document which you accept this may make you faint or feel dizzy because many people get nervous. I didn't, but was not expecting that moderate discomfort or pain. Now, today I felt slightly better for a few hours and their is 3 things I did and one was the acupuncture.  I also eliminated whole grains from my diet and integrate white bread again ( test for 2 weeks).

Sounds interesting I would try it. I have a massage for May 2 and I am really looking forward to it. I live a small town so don't think anything like that would be available here.

Is the white bread your experiment?

    • Posted

Yes, I read is good for gastritis just like whole grain is not. But their is something else I started today. So in a way I have changed 3 things between yesterday and today so if I actually get better I would have to see which 3 did the trick. Love small towns. ;-)

How is the experiment going? Hopefully you are feeling better.

      Hi Chery,

I been doing good, still no Big improvement but I still have hope.   As for the baking soda test, did you do the whole 5 day test?  I did my first test today with 1/4 tsb with water. I did not burped at all.  Based on this and if I get the same results the next 4 days I have very low acidity. This is what I suspected because I don't even have burning on my stomach or nausea or anything else besides gas which is mild with the chest and breathing problems.    My GI for some time said that my problem was gastritis, not reflux.  After the PH and Barium Swallow then she changed her mind. And when I asked her to confirm the results from my PH bravo both of them ( 2 GI's) took a very long time to read the report and ended with " But you do have some acid"     I wonder, you suppose to have acid, alot!  With age acid goes down, not up. So if you ask me many over 50 should have normal or low acid, not high.   I'm really losing trust on GI's, a computer can probably give me a better diagnostic. ;-)  btw, I forget to mention their is another test which is the Heidelberg Stomach Acid Test. It cost like $350 but is probably the best test for this. My previous GI did not give this test but I have a new GI which I will see in 4 weeks so maybe he can do it.

Today is day 4 of baking soda test. The first three days I burped under 2 minutes, however, today (day 4) I didn't burp at all. What? What? What?

Yesterday I ate real small meals (1-cup) and felt better, it is really hard to get 6 meals in, I got in 3. Even tried to exercise, I walked 15 min @ 2.6 which felt good, it opened the breathing some. Then I walked again last evening, same time etc., felt good, but then during the night, I was really gaggy from the mucus. Just don't know.  So I decided not to walk this morning until mucus settles down. I am losing weight without even trying, that is a new concept.I didn't eat dairy today yet, just toast and peanut butter. I know the baking soda test is not very accurate, but when my stomach is nauseous the acid is high and when the nausea is gone the acid is not  there,  So does that mean low acid is my "normal", and when I am sick the acid is then high? So depending on what day (if I had a legitimate test done) the levels would vary? That would be hard to get an accurate result.

So do you feel that you probably have more LPR than gastritis? How was your gastritis diagnosed, visually with a scope?

WOW, sorry to hear that.  How many calories a day you are eating?  I did the numbers yesterday because I'm losing weight as well and I got in 1750 calories but I did push it to hard because that last meal was way to late and I was still full from my previous meal.  I think that 3 meals should be enough and 2 shakes or snaks.  In order for me to gain weight I would have to take 2550 daily and to stay at my weight 2050 calories. Based on expects my ideal weight is 156-160, I'm 149. -(  No, if you had 3 below 2 and one not at all then you might have to run the test 10 times. In my opinion if you get 8 out of 10 below 2 then you are normal (based on the test)  But are you burping alot in those 2 minutes or just once/twice?

I'm going to request the Esophageal Monometry test like Barretts said in one of his posting. I had the barium swallow but not this one. I'm also going to request the Heidelberg Stomach Acid Test even if I have to pay $350 to get it.  Yes, I had the PH Bravo but I'm not 100% sure they got the correct reading because the machine did have a malfunction but they said it was ok.  I have Chronic Gastritis with moderate inflamation but no symptoms. I also have mild reflux on my esophagus and throat, but they said is very mild in both places.
