Breathing problems and GERD

Posted , 10 users are following.

I recently started with a new doctor (seen her twice) and she said I have GERD, I have been through every lung test and many heart tests which all come back negative. This doctor is hearing what I am saying. We haven't done anything more than medications of Pred-20mg for 5 days, Mucinex and Omeprazole, which I had to stop because it seemed to make my breathing worse. Can someone please explain what there breathing feels like? Mine feels like I can't take a deep breath like there is something in the way and if I could just push it out of the way, I would be able to breathe. Some days it is almost good and then other days are not. Lung tests show nothing. Please help me understand if you have similar breathing issues.

I have had the same symptoms, same tests as you.At first cardiologist thought it was Aeortic valve insuficiency and was ready to do. Valve replacement. Then they called it reactive lung disease due to inhalation of oregano oil ( long story). After almost two years of not being able to get a full breath I started getting a blockage in my throat, got scoped by an ENT Doctor, she said my esophagus was red and I have LPR a form of GERD.

I stopped eating after 6pm,cut out carbohydrates, and am trying to quit caffeine but after two weeks of new eating regime I haven't had a flare up of dyspnea.Ive been on a steroid inhaler all this time and was getting little to no relief.

I'm taking Zantec ( over the counter acid blocker) and  predict a full recovery but it won't happen overnight.Quit eating big meals right before you go to sleep and follow the regular Gerd diet ( no tomatoes, pasta, bread especially wheat, spicey foods etc). There is so much controversy but my combination of AMA advice and home remedy seems to be working.

    Good luck

Hi. I have exactly the same sensation and it’s really frustrating bc I can’t sleep bc I feel like I can’t breathe, (even though I’m getting 100% oxygen). Nothing seems to work completely and though I’m following the GERD diet, I feel like I can’t eat or drink anything without this uncomfortable feeling. No pills or inhaler is working and this has been going on for months. One Dr told me to drink prune juice to expel the bowels which produce gas etc, but if I’m not even eating...Please let me know if anyone finds something helpful!!

I can relate to this.  It is as if something is stuck and stopping me taking a good deep breath so I just have to get into a position that may help with breathing.  Sometimes laying on your side with one leg straight out and the other leg raised slightly can help manoeuvre it so it makes breathing a bit better.  Also use a hot water bottle to try and warm the area.

You have my sympathies as it really is horrible

      Hi stephie2 -

Welcome to this awful club. I went thru this same problem about 3 to 4 years ago (I do have asthma). My pullmonologist then told me about acid reflux connection. I was scoped and subsequently put on acid reflux meds. Anyway, kept going about my life just fine (kept taking meds, eating as I pleased, drank beer and chewed tobacco everyday). At this time I was still able to exercise everyday like I had for years. Flash forward to present. Ive had shortness of breath again for like last 6 months, in last 3 months, I have been hospitalized 3 times for GI and simultaneous breathing problems. I  havent been able to exercise like I used to in like 3 months. This time, I have given up beer, chew, and changed my diet dramatically. I am also on acid reducers and more asthma meds again......nothing seems to work. I eat very small meals and nothing at least 4 hours before bed. Im also at my wits end. I can relate with you totally. If anyone comes up with an an answer the useless docs cant, please share.
