Breathing problems only better when lying down!

Posted , 67 users are following.

I have suffered with asthma for decades and from infancy - before the invention of Ventolin! My asthma is accompanied by noisy wheezing and only alleviated by using medicines and sitting backwards on an upright dining chair and leaning over the back of it. My asthma has historically never lasted more than 2-3 days and has become much better after being prescribed Symbicort inhalers a couple of years ago.

Recently however, I have been getting symptoms of breathlessness and coughing, with NO wheezing. This only gets better when I lie down flat! My asthma medication does not help, nor a course of antibiotics in case it was a chest infection. My doctor keeps saying it is probably my asthma but I have never experienced this before. It is lasting for weeks at a time and I am worn out! Help

I am currently experiencing this. I breathe better in fact feel fine laying flat. When I get up I begin shortness of breath and fatigue that gets worse. When you are laying down flat is the least load on the heart. In my case it is my heart caising this. So although there may be other issues don't over look the heart. Have any heart issues ruled out.

Hi steve, i was wondering if you can explain more about your heart problems. Did you receive a diagnosis or get any treatment?

You need to firstly find the reason behind why this is happening. Get yourself checked, probably you can ask your doctor to change your medications. Maybe that should help you in a way. There is also a possiblity that these symptoms that you are facing recently may subside after few days. Contact your doctor for asthma treatment and its medications.

Might I suggest looking into something called hepatopulmonary syndrome.

The sensation of dyspnea (or shortness of breath) in the upright position is called platypnea. This symptom could be suggestive of a problem in your lungs caused by abnormal intrapulmonary shunts, resulting in a ventilation (oxygen flow) and perfusion (blood flow) mismatch. As this syndrome primarily affects the base of your lung, when upright, the mismatch is more pronounced and you have difficulty breathing.

Billythehuynh- I am having exact same - heart/lung pain with hard to breathe. After many tests and some more on Tuesday, she told me I have whats commonly called a hole in my heart. She was explainly what you detailed. I understand this is often from birth and can be finr then have symptoms like these in adulthood. Interesting thing I also had 2 Lyme ticks in the last 8 years... I was stuck on that at first. Now am thinking maybe a combination of factors. Just learing and I am kind of scared.

Billy, I think your suggestion is the best I've had so far and according to my cardio doc I do have an enlarged upper heart and a leaking heart vavle.  I have been fighting the EXACT same symptoms for an entire year and like others state it goes away for a short period and comes back. I only get relief when I wake up in the morning but as soon as I stand up, within 10 minutes I'm right back with heavy chest pain (like a balloon inside center of chest), coughing, shortness of breath. I've been to ER 5 times, pulmonary, ent and primary doc countless times and nobody has a clue. I have always thought I inhaled something but it's an act of God to get a bronchoscopy, still can't get a Dr to refer this procedure. Getting severely depressed and desperate, any advice appreciated.

any update on your condition? my wife is having the same symptoms (no asthma) and currently on the same path as you, with frequent hospital visists and negative tests. She is also having a lot of neurological problems/sensations that are thought to be unrelated.

      Hi Mathough,

Has your wife been checked for Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome?

I have posted about this further along in the thread if you are interested.

I hope your wife feels better and you both find answers.

Hi Minimemo, I have same/similar issues. Many tests came back normal but yesterday my Dr said I have heart shunt- commonly called hole in my heart. Still the things that helped me til today (3 months) are nasacort to help with cough. Its a steriod that cut coughing in half or less. I was coughing 1 time every twenty mins (I documented) and Breo steriod for breathing helps some but not entirely. Dr says I will need a cardiologist. I also keep thinking that antibiotics helped before but she wont give them right now. sad

Update -  we found mold in my bathroom.  When we removed it almost all the rest of my coughing stopped.   Here I was going in my bathroom taking showers and cranking up the hot water to breathe in the steam!  I am now very sensitive to the enviroment, esp mold but am breathing and feeling much better.  So, after all that it appears I had multiple issues causing my problems.  I encourage everyone to keep searching to find the cause(s) so you can get well.

Update :I found bad mold in my house behind the tiles in my bathroom. Once removed I got much better, but I do have contnued sensitivities now to everything. Mold, wood dust, heavy work/labor, perfumes, dust, dry cold air, just about any strong thing sets off a cascade of allergic reaction - ashma/allergies whatever you want to call it. On steriods and inhailers at times to help me breathe. STill have heart problem some and that adds to challenge of breathing.

I have been searching for the reason as to why my cough wont go away after almost two months. After reading the experiences of the people here I feel really bad for everyone because my symptoms are not half as bad although still inconvenient. It started middle of October with a sore throat, headache, coughing with phlegm. I thought it was over 2 weeks later, but a dry cough continued and the puffer didnt help, I have mild asthma. Went to my doctor a month after it all started and he said it was bronchitis and prescribed antis and dimetapp which I took for about 3 days then stopped antibiotics because it made me feel sick. I drink lemon tea with honey and find that it helps and then when I go to sleep the cough goes away. The next morning I dont want to get up because I know its gonna start again. My only symptoms are  a nagging dry cough that stops when I lay down and sleep. please help!

I too have been experiencing this but want to add another glitch, at least in my own case. A couple years ago I was poisoned by the antibiotic Cipro (fluoroquinolone toxicity) which is VERY common (millions have been injured.) Among my more than 30 side effects, which destroyed life as I knew it, was extreme breathing difficulties. It eventually went away, but now I am having breathing trouble again after an asthma attack, and many who are injured by these antibiotics do have side effects come back again, so I am thinking that is also part of my problem. Cipro also gave me fluid around the heart too. If any of you have noticed any other unusual symptoms, you might want to look back and see if you were given Cipro, Levaquin, avelox or any other fluoroquinolones. There is also a site called floxie hope for more information on this.
