Breathing problems only better when lying down!

Posted , 67 users are following.

I have suffered with asthma for decades and from infancy - before the invention of Ventolin! My asthma is accompanied by noisy wheezing and only alleviated by using medicines and sitting backwards on an upright dining chair and leaning over the back of it. My asthma has historically never lasted more than 2-3 days and has become much better after being prescribed Symbicort inhalers a couple of years ago.

Recently however, I have been getting symptoms of breathlessness and coughing, with NO wheezing. This only gets better when I lie down flat! My asthma medication does not help, nor a course of antibiotics in case it was a chest infection. My doctor keeps saying it is probably my asthma but I have never experienced this before. It is lasting for weeks at a time and I am worn out! Help

I have had this condition where lying down makes breathing easier/completely better on and off for a few years and it just started again, so I'm looking for answers as well. It's not as bad for me standing as other people have described. I went to an Asthma and Allergy Clinic and they said it was most likely a symptom of my allergies. I did the allergy shots they recommended (this was about four years ago) but stopped part of the way through because I didn't think they were helping but the next allergy season I didn't have the breathing difficulties like before. Now it's seams to have come back so I'm going to start them again and hope that's the answer. For reference I have a mild form of asthma called "reactive airways disease" where something specific is a trigger (in my case dust) which causes difficulty breathing but doesn't get better lying down (however, does get better after a night's sleep). Hope this helps.

      Hi Franklin,

Have you been checked for Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome?

I have posted about this further along in the thread if you are interested.

I hope you feel better and find your answers.

      Poor posture!!

I had a poor posture (Sway back) foryears.

i noticed whenever i stood with my back straight, i breathe better. i dropped a reddit link so people can check if this is the cause of their problem but the Mods deleted it.

Also i find that magnesium supplements help me to breathe better

I've had a similar problem for a few months now and I've been to both a cardiologist and a pulmonologist and they both gave me a clean bill of health. I started doing research online and there seems to be three other possible causes, which includes: anxiety, acidosis (too much acid in the bloodstream), and a pinched nerve in the spine caused by a compresses or herniated disk.

I recently spoke to my uncle who is a chiropractor and explained that my symptoms get better or worse depending on the position of my body, with standing vertically causing the breathing difficulty and shortness of breath the most. He seems to believe it had something to do with a pinched nerve and recommends seeing a chiropractor. While I haven't had a chance to do that yet, I'm posting this now in case it helps someone who is suffering from this problem because the problem itself can cause a tremendous amount of anxiety, especially in this atmosphere of fear due to the virus.

I'll try to post a follow up once I get it sorted out, but in the meantime hopefully that helps give someone some clues and some hope, because I know a lot of doctors can be of no help.

I am so glad I found this thread because I have had the same problems. I have had asthma since I was a little kid so I am a pro at what happens with that. in March I got really sick needing 3 rounds of steriods and antibiotics.. it was never the same after . I have been to my pulmonary doctor, regular doctor , er and no one knows... i only cough here and there but i always feel like im short of breath. I have a lot of pressure in my chest that is relived when I lay down. My doctor gave me prilosec to see if it was hearburn but I am on week 2 of that and it hasn't changed. my pulmonary doctor has me doing my symbacourt 3x q day vs 2 and that has not worked... i have a echo scheduled on Monday and blood work. I am so frustrated bc this is just not right and no one has any clue what to do or what it is. it's very uncomfortable.
