Broken

Hi all, I damaged my ankle on Tuesday, stepped funny foot went inwards and felt a very sharp pain and could walk on it which last all afternoon, we to AE and had xrays which showed a small lateral fracture on the talus and possible fracture on the tip of the lateral malleolus, I have been put in a boot for the time being and have a follow up appointment soon. However I am now not experiencing any pain or discomfort, tried walking without the boot and it feels fine just slightly tender. Surly it cant be fractured or i would be in some sort of pain and i would of thought I would not be able to put any weight on it. I really don't know what to do as the boot is doing my head in and making life extremely annoying, I'm off work for a few weeks now anyway but really want to loose the boot. Anyone else had simular experiences,

Hi,  your ankle may feel fine but unless you keep it immobilised with the boot you're at risk of just storing up issues for the future.  I ignored medical advice 30 years ago to go on holiday after a slight fracture playing football - didn't want a cast 'cos it would ruin 2 weeks in the sun.  I'm now 55 and 13 weeks post op after an ankle fusion -  6 weeks in a cast and the remainder in a boot.  This was due to osteoarthritis in the ankle caused by the original slight fracture not healing properly.

google some images of ankle osteoarthritis to see for yourself - also check out how long bones take to knti back together.

Of course, your foot may be fine and losing the boot might be ok for you, but, personally, I'd keep with it.

    Hope all goes well,

    Andy

I endorse what jays said - it may FEEL fine, but it is NOT fine. Think longterm. Keep it on now for a few weeks vs. a lifetime of discomfort. It's really not worth the tradeoff. I'd be pretty strict with keeping it on.
