Broken Fibula Recovery Questions

Hi everyone!

So about a week ago I broke my fibula - clean break with no surgery needed, so that's good. A week in and still very swollen, bruised and sore.

After seeing the ortho Dr, I was left with more questions (or concerns). I was put in a air boot with crutches. He mentioned that because it's not a weight bearing bone I would be able to start putting weight on it whenever I felt comfortable enough to. Has anyone experienced such a quick turnaround for walking? I'm a bit nervous to cause a setback.

As far as the boot I have been wearing during my normal day to day, however have been taking off at night to ice and sleep. Any concerns here? I have read people leave it on almost 24/7.

I definitely would appreciate any advice, tips or suggestions. Just want to make sure quick and successful recovery. Thanks in advance!!

Dan

    Hi Dan

You seem to be doing really well.  The fact that it is only just over a week since it was broke, in my book that is brilliant.

I badly fractured my tibula and fibula in an accident 55 years ago.  I had a hip replacement nearly 18 months ago and I'm suffering with nerve damage in my foot.  The doctors are saying it's a result of the fracture All those years ago.

Keep up with your quick recovery and keep doing what you are doing.

    All the best

Hi there! I saw your post- I am currently in the same situation as you described: broken fibula, no surgery, one week after the injury. I was given a walking boot and was told to start walking on it with crutches as soon as I feel up to it. I'm supposed to check in if I'm not walking in 1-2 weeks.

How are you doing? I can't imagine walking that soon with the pain I'm experiencing now! Hope you're on the mend!

Hey there!  I'm feeling better every day.  Still pretty swollen and bruised though.

I actually just had my week two evaluation and xrays.  I am walking with the boot only at this point with little pain.

The xrays today showed a bit of displacement, but the dr didnt seem to concerned.  Said to just continue on for the next month in the boot.

Becuase I havent been in a ton of pain, I have been pushing my walking a bit.  After seeing the displacement xrays, I will try to be a bit more cautious.

      How are you feeling?
