Broken pinky finger in 2012 - had surgery - PIP joint fused... can we fix it?

Hi everyone,

I suffered a pretty nasty break in my right pinky finger while playing basketball in 2012. I did have surgery; however, it did not go as well as I would have hoped and my PIP joint has since fused at about 60 degrees of flexion.

I have lived with the break since 2012, but I am about to start dental school, and I have to admit that I am pretty unsure of myself as I enter a career that demands manual dexterity. I have attached pictures from the original break and just after surgery.

I recently had new x-rays performed on my pinky, and it appears that the portion of my proximal phalanx that was jutting over the PIP joint (see original x-ray) has fused with the middle phalanx, leading to my immobility. Unfortunately, I do not have those X-rays; however, I am under the impression that a surgeon could go in and remove the portion of fused bone that is bridging itself over my PIP joint to restore mobility.

Is this possible? If it is, what is the estimated viability regarding a joint that hasn't seen movement in over six years?
