brown mucus in the morning from throat and occasionally mild ear pain

Hi, for the last month I have been waking up in the morning with a lot of irritating mucus in my throat, I have to hack it up and too my big surprise it's brown.... Almost dark brown! Shock! it's only in the morning! The rest of the day I also have a lot of throat mucus but it's clear... occasionally I have some ear pain.. mild.. That has been going on for probably 2 months.. I have been to a ENT 3 times and he scoped me through my nose down to my throat and says everything looks normal.. He looked me in the ears and it looks fine as well.. So I'm thinking what the hells is going on?? I'm so freaked out about this.. that it might be something serious... I don't see how brown mucus is normal so there is obviously something wrong?? Has anyone experienced anything like this?

It is probably an allergen in your bdrm. It could be your pillow, or even a laundry treatment

Yes I have been experiencing the same brown mucus in the morning  for several months now and sometimes a lot of it but not every day. I also have experienced some pain in my ear as well. It has been very scary. I had an endoscopy which found some things but not where the blood was coming from, lots of blood tests, and very recently a bronchoscopy with biopsies which all came back negative.

Yes, every day. I also know that the dark brown stuff is definately blood. I had it tested at the medical clinic.

      Hi!

Do you caugh at all when you spit out the brown mucus???

My daughter 7 has it every morning ,but she doesn't need to caugh. She just moves her mouth as we do when we all spit out saliva.

Did the clinic told you where the blood leaks from??

      Thank you!!!

could be acid reflux. Sometimes the acid can travel up while sleep. I suffer from the same thing as you only when I wake up in the am. And I have acid reflux

Sounds similar to what I was going through. Excessive mucus to the point I started sleeping in a recliner. Muscus to the point if i was sleeping on my back and rolled onto my stomach i could feel the thick muscus dropping by globs to the front of my chest. It was thick, almost too thick to cough up. Coughing. Shortness of breath. SORE throat from the "post nasal drip" triggered by my "allergies". Wheezing. Stuffy, runny nose.

I'm 42 and otherwise healthy. I was told by my doctor that I had bronchitis and had developed allergies. I was prescribed an antibiotic, an inhaler and told to take Prilosec. My gut feeling told me I didn't just develop allergies so I didn't take the Prilosec. I took the antibiotics but still was having issues. I took an expectorant which barely helped. So I started googling. Doctors hate it but you must investigate your own health!

I found silent reflux. It turns out Silent Reflux can trigger asthma, wheezing and a whole host of things! I had no "heartburn". It was silent but the clues were there. My doctor didnt see them.

I had been eating a typical America diet. I tried acid reflux medications to no relief.

I switched to small amounts of meat and huge amounts of veggies. No sugar, no refined food. The only thing I added to my veggie/meat mixtures were seasonings, vinegars, mustards and a tiny amount of healthy oils. I ate the mixtures hot or cold as a salad. These foods helped my gut bacteria normalize. Processed foods actually destroy good gut bacteria. Acid reflux medications I found after research actually interfere with healthy gut bacteria which affects your ability to properly digest food!

3 weeks later and no symptoms whatsoever!

    Hello,

I have had this issue and at first i thought i moved bak to india with all the pollution this might be happening. Finally i did goto a doctor and he explained by just listening to my problem first u r snoring or breathing through your mouth. Mouth when dries up lets go of skin n some sort of liquid to keep it wet but due to snoring all that just gets accumulates in your throat. Second after eating and before going to sleep you do not clean your throat. During day ee eatn drink all kinds ot junk which mostly is oily our body tries to excreet it one way or other. Easiest way to do is through warm or tea hot glass of water. Take it first thing in the morning before brushing or eating and second after dinner two hours before bed another warm water. The nose pot to clean sinus only works for snoring people. Drinking warm water has helped a lot and has more gud effects on ur body which u can chek urself. Try its very gud.

When I had this it was due to mycoplasma pneumoniae bacteria.  I did not have pneumonia, it the name of the bacteria that I had.  I had to take a specific antibiotic.  It was diagnosed by three tests:  nasal wash; throat culture; chest X-ray.

IT WAS GUM DISEASE (for me and here is why) .......I hope this helps someone. I only signed up to the site to be able to share my experience in the hope of helping someone like myself that was worrying into a frenzie thinking it was something more devious and much more horrible. From what I have read and experienced what makes this a cause to isolate is that the symptoms are common with a wide range of diseases and illnesses, which is why you should see a doctor and dentist. I was experiencing alot of what I have read others have experienced. Phlegm that ranged from bright red to light brown to dark brown to yellow tinged when i woke up in the morning. I was thinking it had something to do with indigestion, to sinus issues or things more devious that were out of my control. I couldn't wait to spit in the morning hoping it had gone away after I changed some variable like my diet or a sinus wash, but it was always there in some form or fashion which only made the worry worse. After reading this and other forums I decided to start from the bottom up and take a trip to the dentist. Long story short, it turned out to be gum disease or as it is known periodontitis. Gum disease is a progressive disease so you can have little to no symptoms with your gums or teeth depending where you are on the spectrum of severity. I received a deep cleaning and got serious about taking care of my gums and teeth to give it a fair shot (religiously brushing twice a day and water flossing every night). It took 2 to 3 weeks before the blood from the procedure and residual irritation when brushing and flossing and it finally went away completely. I should note that when i went to the dentist they told me they didn't see why i would have the brown or blood colored spit in the morning. I have since created my only logical theory of why i was seeing what i was every morning. Because I usually don't swallow at night the blood from the gums (which oozes very very slowly) accumulates in the back of the throat and turns brown as it oxidizes from the passing air, like rust. In my case i suspect that it was my molars and two of my wisdom teeth in the back of my mouth that were the primary cause of the blood. If you irritate the gum that is bleeding you may see bright red blood because it is fresh like when you eat something hard or brush vigorously. This i would see from my front teeth from time to time when brushing. For those individuals that say they take an antibiotic and it goes it away, it makes perfect sense to me because from what I have read gum disease is technically an infection and when the infection is taken care of through the antibiotic it goes away, then when you stop taking it the infection comes back because the underlying problem has not been dealt with and the bleeding begins again. A western diet is notoriously bad for dental health which is why we in the west experience so many problems and issues with our gums and teeth and regular checkups and maintenance are necessary. I think it is also important to point out that I had no issues with my teeth.....no cavities, discoloration or issues what so ever which is why i thought it couldn't be my teeth. This was my own personal experience with this issue and hopefully it helps someone to ease their anxiety and get it taken care of with the help of a doctor and dentist along with personal diligence of dental health.
