Bruising

I'm recently diagnosed with PMR and have yet to see a rheumatologist so I am not on Prednisone yet. One thing I've noticed recently is a lot of bruising. All over my body even on my stomach where I can't explain how they got there. Is this a symptom of PMR. Please understand I am not on Prednisone yet.

The Pred thins the skin which is then more susceptible to bruising but I've not heard of bruising as a symptom of PMR. As you say, you're not yet on Pred.

I always bruised easily pre-PMR and steroids took it up another level.  The skin on my arms and legs always has bruises and recently an afternoon's pottering about in the garden left my arms looking as if I'd encountered a mad dog.  My skin is very dry and unless I use a moisturiser, they get irritated and I scratch - which doesn't help the situation one bit!

I've had to learn to be careful with sticking plasters too.  The wrong kind will take the skin off my arms when I remove it and that doesn't help either.

Seriously though, I also used to bruise so easily esp. on the higher Pred. doses. As I'm down quite low now (2.0mg. after 4 years) it's not a problem. Like you,  I also had the dry thin skin but that's improved too.

My oveall view now is that, as autoimmune diseases go, PMR is probably the best one to get.( My amazing family history includes RA, Sclerdoma, and Chirrosis. . . enough said!).  J

That should be ' Scleroderma' - hasty typo. .. .

My bruising started when I started pred but not before. Are you taking something else that might cause it?

The only change is I've upped my thyroid dosage. But I've looked that up and nowhere does it say that that could cause bruising. I am on aspirin but have been for years and the bruising is new as of the last three weeks. I think I'm going to call my GP on Monday.

I'm not 100% sure without checking, but doesn't aspirin thin the blood? That could make bruising more likely. Good idea to contact your GP though.

It is my understanding that bruising is quite common with PMR and prednisone. Don't know which is the cause, or if it is a combination...but people on this forum have talked about it. Someone with more knowledge will respond??

Only really when the PMR patient is on pred - PMR itself doesn't have any reason to cause that sort of severity of bruising.

PMR is only the name given to a constellation of symptoms - and it has several possible underlying causes. Your GP may have decided it is PMR - but has he investigated ALL the possible alternative diagnoses?

If you are bruising like that with no pred or anticoagulation therapy to blame then I think you really must see your doctor asap because it could be a symptom of something more serious than merely the PMR we talk about here. PMR itself is unlikely to cause that degree of bruising but other forms of vasculitis which could also present with PMR symptoms might and there are the other things too.

Hi, from what I understand no bruising with PMR, I have only had it for 4 months, so no expert:  Maybe see your Dr and have your white blood cell counts done : Don't wait to long, always a reason.

    I wish you well :
