Bunion, Hammertoe, and Achilles Surgery 1 week away

Hello, I am getting closer and closer to this surgery on my left foot and leg...I posted a couple of weeks ago and really appreciated all the suggestions you gave me...I am exercising right up until the day before surgery - treadmill and an adult trike...On surgery day, I cannot eat or drink anything until at least 2 pm...I think that will be tough...I'm getting more details Monday when I see the surgeon.  I have borrowed a walker and knee walker - I must not bear weight on the left foot for two weeks...I have arthritis in my big toe, so the surgeon is cutting a wedge of bone out of the bottom of the toe and pinning it - hammertoe cut and pinned - achilles on back of leg, cut at the top...I have a list of everything I want near me the first few days, such as books, movies, cross stitch simple projects, etc., but I'm going to have to see how I deal with the pain...As I go along, I'll probably post what is happening.  Thank you all so much.

Good luck Susan. I wish I had found this forum pre surgery as you sound like you are well prepared! It was all a bit of a shock when I did it.

    Sending you good wishes. X

By the way...try and stay ahead of the pain in the first few days and have pain meds regularly. There is no need to suffer! 😊

okay, good advice about the pain...All my pre-op tests were HUGELY improved in terms of blood sugar so I am back down in the normal range, and not borderline diabetic...anyway, all those positive things right now are helping me...

Hi barbara, Surgery was Sat. that day & Sunday - WORST PAIN in my life - Today Monday 8 am CT in US - significantly less pain...Surgeon said he thought it went well.  pics of my cast & my therapy pet bunny.  My husband has been a fantastic caregiver...I took pain meds ahead of the pain, but will now cut the in half and see how I do...

Wow they really wrapped you up well.  Maybe because you had other work on your Achilles?  I didn't have plaster just bandage and a wedge shoe, he said he put screws in my bones so didn't need the plaster.  Thought you were having two feet done? Maybe it was someone else I chatted with.  The memory of the pain came back to me when I read yours, but it does get better.  I'm 4 weeks tomorrow, have done away with the wedge shoe and wearing Teva sandals, even getting around the house without a stick!  It can only get better for you now.  Good luck

they said No Way to me: re two feet done at the same time - cast is for Achilles work.  no weight bearing - very tricky manipulating the knee walker to go to the bathroom - Jim has to help me - my foot cannot touch the floor...I do not know about Teva sandals - I will look them up - I see the surgeon this Friday and then I may know more - he said only if I heal like a 10 year old (i am 64 years old) would I be able to bear even the slightest weight before 2 weeks after surgery...I'm happy for your progress - gives me hope...

I'm 69 so think I'm doing ok, but didn't think so in the first three weeks!  It was so painful to put my foot down in the first week I had to hop with my walker, wished I'd bought the wheelchair earlier.  I guess you will have a little more to heal with the Achilles, keep busy in your mind and it will go well.  Mind you I don't expect you can concentrate on anything these past few days.

yes, there have been a few items I did not realize I needed or could use to make things easier until after surgery - also I am set up with everything around on a spare bed and call Jim on an intercom home phone if I need something (but he has to work 5 to 6 hours (professor at university) away from home, but I think I will be okay... I am sleepy most the time, so on the bed I can catch naps when needed. I am starting to be able to concentrate on something other than the pain...
