Bunion Operation

I hope this will help anybody having or thinking of having a bunion operation.

I had my operation on my right foot 4 weeks ago. I had read so many horrific articles about how painful it is etc. etc. I can only speak for myself, I felt some pain for a couple of days which painkillers took care of. After that it was a little uncomfortable for 10 days. After two weeks I went back and had the dressing changed, and apart from the inconvenience of resting my foot for 6 weeks, I would not hesitate in having the left one operated. I still have two weeks to go before I return to the fracture clinic and have the plaster dressing removed. Hopefully then I will be able to start walking again. I was given elbow crutches a black boot to wear when moving about the house, these has been a godsend.

I hope this has helped anybody who is worried about having a bunion operation.

I was interested to read your reply regarding your operation.  This is very reassuring to someone, like me, who is considering having this done.  I am glad you had a good experience and hope you are now fully recovered and able to wear normal shoes.

Ive had a bunionectomy and omg it hurts like crazy im on my first week so far and i will tell u i cant wait till i recover and when i recover i will not go for my other foot forget it im just wondering if ur foot was still swollen after a week and when did u actually walked on ur foot. I use crutches and when i get out of bed to go to the restroom it hurts so much. The doctor told me 24/7 bedrest only to restroom and back. Oh besides the bunionectomy i have a pin in my toe to straighten my toe.

I'm now week 7 post op,first week was horrendous I must say..had stitches removed week 2 and all bandages and surgical shoe removed after week 6. I have a pin and 2 screws to straighten my big toe. Things are easier now but my foot aches constantly and I have to take tablets every day. I can only wear certain shoes. I won't be having my left foot done unless I can no longer walk. Big op bigger than I thought.

It might be that the infection can get worse or spread further if the surgery is performed while the infection is present. I've heard this applies to mouth,,,, or gum surgery too. Its and it's rough enough healing without the aggravation of ar infection or other matters to take cof during surgery. You might should just hold off then have it done once the doctor is assured that the infection is gone. It will be worth the wait!! Wishing you the best with your surgery and recovery!!

Just wondering if anyone living in Australia has yet had the minimally invasive surgery on their bunion or bunions where they insert a wire which is removed after a month.  The recovery time is supposed to be a lot quicker as it is a lot more less invasive than the other normal procedure.     This is called the Bosch Technique.   It's about time this was available in Australia but I still hav'nt heard anyone here getting it done this way yet.    I keep putting my surgery off until one day I can get it done this way as they can do it this way with just a leg block.     This operation is available in UK Germany and USA.

Hi, my names Bella, I'm 15 years of age and I suffer from flat feet and bunions of both feet. I was diagnosed with flat feet at the age of 8 and not long after they told me I had bunions on both feet. My grandma suffered from the same thing, so though I was rather young, they told me that was probably why. Since I was young I've suffered from constant horrible pains of the centers of my feet, like something is tearing, and my bunions ache as if they've been hammered with something. They right bunion is a bit smaller than a walnu, while the left is about the size of a grape ( the right is worse). The pain, at times is almost nonexistent, but at times is also excruciating. I stopped running at the age of 12 because it became too painful. Now I just do warm soaks, and massages, but even that doesn't always help. I was wondering if bunion surgery would be a good option, as well as surgery on my flat feet? I would have to wait a while anyway due to not being able to afford the surgery, but I would like to know if it would be a good option for me in the future? I know this is an older post, but I need advice.

      Hi Bella,

Sorry to hear you are suffering with your feet! I also had problems since I was a teenager and went to see an orthopaedic surgeon when I was about 14. At the time he told me I would qualify for surgery but I would have to wait until I was at least 18 because you have to reach "skeletal maturity" as you are still developing and changing until that age. It would be worth visiting your doctor to see what they say, but be prepared they may not be able to do anything until you are a bit older. I think you'd need to really think about how much this affects you and your daily life - you say you've stopped running which already sounds like it's having a big impact. I would say definitely don't do it if you just don't like the look of them - recovery is much harder than I was expecting so would have to really be worth it.

I have just had surgery on both of my feet, am 9 days post op and really hoping that it sorts my problems out once and for all. I am now 27 so have been waiting a long time for this since my initial appointment aged 13.

      Best of luck with everything!

Did anyone have bunion surgery with no screws or plates left in there toe?? . I thought that was very odd?? I just had a pin removed from my big toe after 7 weeks.. Just worried that maybe my toe will have a greater chance in shifting back to the bunion.. But also I have pain as well under my big toe ..
