Bunion Operation

I hope this will help anybody having or thinking of having a bunion operation.
I had my operation on my right foot 4 weeks ago. I had read so many horrific articles about how painful it is etc. etc. I can only speak for myself, I felt some pain for a couple of days which painkillers took care of. After that it was a little uncomfortable for 10 days. After two weeks I went back and had the dressing changed, and apart from the inconvenience of resting my foot for 6 weeks, I would not hesitate in having the left one operated. I still have two weeks to go before I return to the fracture clinic and have the plaster dressing removed. Hopefully then I will be able to start walking again. I was given elbow crutches a black boot to wear when moving about the house, these has been a godsend.
I hope this has helped anybody who is worried about having a bunion operation.

For me the main thing is to get rid of the pain and discomfort; as you say my feet don't look so bad but man do they hurt! I've had bunions my whole life as long as I can remember so I have high expectations from my surgeon but also have no idea how I will feel about my new feet.
I won't be in casts, I will be in pressure bandages and Velcro orthotic shoes. Very trendy - not! Oh well it will be worth it in the end!

supposedly, but still in same position as before ( under correction ) but thats the least of my worries!
Followed all rules, at the 6 wk. appointment out of "heel walking" shoe. Told surgeon feeling of tight band
around instep, told me " early days yet"
Walked flat footed as my foot wouldn't stretch, at 8 wks. decided i must push myself scared my foot may "set" Now trying to walk heel thro' to toes but extremely painful, can't roll onto ball of foot. Feels as though everything has been tightened too much a " trussed up" sensation. Also feels as though walking on a hard pea.
Only sick note for 10wks. in all....no chance! See surgeon at 12 wk. post surgery told me i'd be " well on my way " will need a miracle, Please, has anyone else had this experience? (RKD right, they all think "just a bunion" )

Overall I'm fine, no pain apart from the odd twinge, just really uncomfortable and its really scary walking in my orthotc shoes with the pressure on my feet - but it's ok. I thought to describe my pain I would think what is the worst that by feet have felt after a day walking round with bunions - well I have not post op experienced any thing on that scale - so that surely is manageable I think.
I had one really low day when I think my body had had enough of the powerfull painkillers but now I am ok and not feeling sick, just immobile and really really bored.

toe to be deformed. The consultant has explained in detail what the op will entail. But I didn't ask if it
would be local or general anaesthetic.
Im walking round at home in bare feet only time it doesn't hurt.
RKD sorry you wernt given proper info, my surgeon said it can take from 12 weeks to 12 month before
your back to normal

Glad to hear that you were on holiday and walking around happily at 10 weeks post op. I'm getting more and more mobile which I am delighted about at day 31 post op - still a bit swollen but so much happier!

I had two bunions on both feet, so four toes in all. The operation was 1 hour 15 minutes and then I was in recovery/post op for 1 hour 45 mins including sitting up in a chair eating a sandwich.
Pain has not really been an issue, mostly lots of swelling and being uncomfortable (but manageable) to walk.

I've had pain from the bunions for years and I find it very painful to wear shoes. They generally don't fit well and I hobble about work like an old woman. I'm a size 2 or 3 in a shoe so find it difficult to get decent, fashionable comfortable shoes normally never mind with bunions. Any advice on where to get nice, comfortable, small, trendy shoes would be appreciated and also keep your experiences coming, they are invaluable. Thanks.

My bunions were very extreme and I needed to be off my feet completely for one week then plastic boot and crutches for another 5 weeks so needed a lot of help. The best advice I had was don't do them both at once and anyway my surgeon refused to do that.
Most people don't have anywhere near such complicated surgery or long recovery time but it's a good idea to find out what is likely to happen to you and round up friends and family to help. This is definitely the time to pull in favours.
Good luck hope you are as happy as me with the outcome.
