Bunion surgery - much more painful than I ever imagined
Posted , 157 users are following.
Had Scarf osteotomy to remove bunion on right foot on Friday 2 March. Foot numb for almost 24 hours so not much pain until Saturday morning - then sheer agony! Ibuprofen & codeine alternated with paracetamol & codeine the most effective painkillers but you can only take so many in a day. Have stayed in bed as walking (on heel) has been almost impossible and stairs too terrifying; bathroom visits have been a source of dread as when I stand there is a surge of blood to the foot and it feels as though it might explode. Then for the next 10 minutes or so after returning to bed the pain and throbbing are intense. However, this is now easing a bit so hoping to be gradually more mobile. Any advice anybody?

Did you have a bandage or cast on? I have phoned the hospital to chase up my appointment for the dressings off - so intrigued to see what's underneath!

I have my first hospital appointment tomorrow with the fracture clinic where my dressings will be changed and my feet 'reviewed' I'm a little nervous but believe I am making reasonable progress.
Sounds like everyone is doing really well which is great to hear
Take care

I can walk fairly well outside with my boot now and just went to meet a friend for coffee at a cafe. The sun is shining here although it is quite cold.
I tried putting my foot sans thick sock into my Birkenstock clogs today and it fits - hurrah! I am going to make myself hold off from shoe shopping until I see the doctor again only 1 week and three days to go. I hope then I will be able to walk about without the boot. I can't wait!
I am still elevating my foot when I am at home.
Best Wishes all. Older Beth

The good news - the little black sandals with minimum straps which don't get in the way of the scars fit my feet so I could go to the podiatrist in a pair of shoes!!! She didn't approve of them particularly as they don't give much support, but there's no way I'm going to a wedding in under two weeks with socks or the dreaded Velcro uni shoes where the straps all rub on my scars! And I can wear these in the short term for outings :-) ðŸ‘
More good news is that the left foot incision which I had to get re-stripped last week as it wasn't knitting is healing better. I also found a knot and piece of stitch left in my foot which I extracted last night which had been hampering the healing of the cut between my first and big toe!
Walking is less painful even than two days ago, again it's then tempting to do more isn't it?
Well done everyone with your progress and outings which are good for the soul. One of my daughters is coming up to stay this week so we shall go out, probably taking the wheelchair as I don't really know how far I can walk yet, but at least we can go and do some girlie things together :-)
Keep resting and posting V x

I have my left foot done, not sure what type of op it was. day 12 for me and off to see the consultant, so looking forward
To getting my foot out of the bandage for at least
A bit. It's still a bit nippy but not too bad. I am able to walk without crutches and get upstairs etc. I went for a walk to the end of my garden today. My goodness , what an adventure. Keeping foot up as much as I can, but you know that when it is feeling good you stand or walk a bit more then pay for it later. Was back on the strong pain killers through the night.

Beth- I was 'plastered' for the first two weeks then dressings for a couple of days then.....nothing but my heel walkers. The day you get your dressings off is amazing-and guess what- your feet get better and better looking with each day!! I'm amazed at how quickly my wounds have healed.
VJ- glad the shoes fitted- how on earth did you manage to find them? I have tried on a pair of old Clarks shoes and know that they will be the ones I'll probably order in a larger size. They aren't the sort of shoes you would wear to a wedding though!
Suzy and Joan- Good luck with getting your dressings off too- let us know how things go.
Other(older) Beth- nice to hear from someone who goes before us all. I don't have Birkenstock clogs but they sound good shoes to look out for.
Feet up all!

Bunionectomy and correction of 2 hammer toes with a rod to straighten my big toe. I was just feeling like I was becoming a pain pill addict. Lol... Thank you for all your advice! As far as my pain level, it gets easier
Everyday, however, when I get up to move around for very necessary reasons, the rush of blood to my foot
Continues to produce unbearable throbbing pain... Thanks to my fiancé Lamonte, who holds my foot up while going to the bathroom and anytime when available, produces zero blood rush. Can't wait until I get over this part... I get my dressing changed Mar 26th.... I'm praying for a pain free visit... In two wks, lt foot bunionectomy
Happy Healing

My surgeon says it will be a total of two months before I can wear trainers ( they should look good with my work clothes) and 3 months before I can really start to live a more normal life , is that everyone else's experience who is further on in in this journey,?
Must admit I am still glad that I had both feet done at the same time I just can't imagine doing it all again. So stage 3 of being able to properly wash my feet will be in another 2 weeks can't wait.
How is everyone else today?

It really does start to get easier but having good pain management and keeping your foot / feet elevated really helps, and I've found the encouragement I've had from the others in this forum so helpful especially on a crisi day
Make sure you have recently taken pain killers before going to get your dressings changed not because it's terrible but because it'll just take the edge off the discomfort I'm now on day 14 and it does get easier.

I've noticed I have started walking without bending my feet as when I do particularly on stairs it really hurts. I still come downstairs sideways! Did anyone else find bending the foot to walk properly was really painful? Inside the house and outdoors is v different! Just spoken to a massage person who does ultra sound. Says it would really help the feet to heal so I think I will book a session and he can come to my house! Perfect.
At the mo I'm wondering what will be the point in a couple of weeks if I cannot walk much!?
Keep going yvette it does get better. First couple of weeks or sour I stood more than a few minutes I'd become v faint but that has passed. It's all about patience as I keep posting and telling myself. Have a good and restful foot day. VJ 👣👣xx
